Ichenhausen offers several distinct ways to explore culture and history. The Bavarian School Museum combines a look at Bavarian school history with an exhibition on Jewish education; the former synagogue and the Jewish cemetery each offer their own perspective on Jewish history in the area. The Celtic Listening Tour adds an audio-themed experience. When looking for accommodation in Ichenhausen, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your stay.

School History at the Bavarian School Museum

The Bavarian School Museum in Ichenhausen focuses on Bavarian school history from the 19th century onwards. In addition, an exhibition that opened in 2026 explores Jewish education in Bavaria, spanning the Middle Ages to the present day. Across around 200 m², models, historical photographs, interviews and interactive stations offer insights into this subject. Two perspectives thus sit side by side: Bavarian school history from the 19th century onwards and the long history of Jewish education. Visitors interested in history and educational pathways can explore different periods during a single museum visit.

Former Synagogue and Jewish Cemetery

The former Ichenhausen Synagogue was built in 1781 in the Neoclassical style. The building acquired its present appearance following extensive renovation and restoration work from 1985 to 1987. Today, it serves as a meeting place and houses the permanent exhibition “Jews in the Countryside – The Example of Ichenhausen.” A ritual bath (mikveh) can be viewed in the basement. The building’s history, its current use and the exhibition bring together several aspects at one location. The synagogue has regular opening hours; check the specific visiting times in advance.

Around 900 gravestones and the Taharah house are preserved at the Jewish cemetery. Check the current opening hours before visiting. The Ichenhausen Celtic Listening Tour also starts from the cemetery car park: at five listening stops, it uses audio to introduce the lives of the Celts and Druids. The two experiences offer different perspectives: the cemetery preserves evidence of Jewish history, while the tour paints an audio picture of life among the Celts and Druids.
