Leipheim offers a range of highlights for a stay: local history surrounding the Peasants’ War, the protected Leipheimer Moos nature reserve, and cycling routes with named stages. When choosing a hotel in Leipheim, you can consider whether culture, nature or cycling will shape your trip.

Discover local history and the Peasants’ War

At the Blaue Ente Local History and Peasants’ War Museum, the old building covers Leipheim’s history, while the museum barn is dedicated to the German Peasants’ War. The museum also includes the “Mühlentechnik” exhibition building, where you can explore milling technology in the building and using display boards. These three themes offer different points of interest for your museum visit: local history, the Peasants’ War and milling technology.

Another link to the Peasants’ War is the Jakob-Wehe Gate, a passage through the Leipheim city wall west of the Old Spittel. Jakob Wehe was Leipheim’s first Protestant pastor and one of the leaders of the Leipheim band during the Peasants’ War of 1525. A guided walking tour of the town starts at the castle courtyard, passes through the ensemble of the castle, museum and tithe barn, and follows the city wall through the Upper Town. The accessible panoramic walkway runs along the city wall from the Jakob-Wehe Gate to Schießgraben-Straße, where you can go for a stroll. Check access locally in case conditions change.

The tithe barn at the castle courtyard also has a varied history: the town bought the building in 1815; from 1865 to 1970, it served as a municipal works depot and as a garage for vehicles and equipment belonging to the volunteer fire brigade. It was saved from demolition in 1983, extensively renovated from 1993 onwards, and opened in 2002 as a venue for art and cultural exchange, creativity and inspiration. Today, in addition to a restaurant, it houses a community hall and the town council chamber. As an event venue, it offers a varied programme featuring classical music, jazz, world music, contemporary music, folk, blues, theatre, cabaret and children’s culture. If you are planning a visit, check the latest event dates and details about how the venue can be used.

Leipheimer Moos and its trails

Leipheimer Moos is a fen and has been a nature reserve since 1993. Despite severe human impact, it offers an attractive, diverse landscape and a suitable habitat for numerous rare animals and plants. Marked turnoffs from the Donaumoos circular route lead to the “Rural History and Nutrition” and “Experience Nature” trails in Leipheimer Moos. The longer and shorter loops are 3 to 10 kilometres long. When choosing a route, you can take the stated distance into account.

Cycling routes with different terrain profiles

Leipheim is a stop on the 604-kilometre Danube Cycle Route through Germany. The route is very well signposted and can also be ridden in sections. The Danube-Alb circular route runs through Günzburg, Leipheim, Riedheim, Langenau, Rammingen, Asselfingen, Niederstotzingen and Riedhausen; an optional route also passes through Bächingen and the mooseum. The total distance is 43 kilometres, of which around 10 kilometres run through Leipheim district.

The Swabian Potato Tour starts in Leipheim. You can ride it independently or, if you wish, as a guided tour organised by the potato inns. You can also join at other stages, leave the route early or ride it in the opposite direction. The route passes through Bavarian Swabia, sometimes directly by historic sites, through forests and past other attractions. Its stages are suitable for children and families. The routes are mostly paved, but also include some short climbs and unpaved farm tracks—a useful distinction when planning your tour.

The historic Leipheim Children’s Festival is also worth considering if you are planning a visit around a particular date: it traditionally takes place on the second weekend in July. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the year you have in mind. To choose where to stay, consider your planned activities: a walking tour and museum visit, a loop in the Moos or a cycling stage each give Leipheim a different focus.
