The Günzstausee premium walking trail starts at Ellzee Town Hall and leads into the Günz floodplain along gravel farm tracks. Other trails explore the surrounding area in different directions: north from the community hall to Waldstetten, along the Günz embankment through the Taubried, or by bike through Ellzee. When planning, it makes a difference whether you are looking for a trail that starts in the village or want to include Ellzee as a stop on a longer cycling tour.

Hiking at the Günz Reservoir and through the Taubried

The gravel farm tracks and the starting point at Town Hall are the key landmarks on the Günzstausee premium walking trail. The trail certification is valid until October 2028. Another trail leads north from Ellzee community hall to Waldstetten; along the way, there are views of the Günz Reservoir and the surrounding countryside. The two descriptions therefore differ mainly in their starting points and destinations.

The walking trail along the Günz embankment follows a distinct route, too: it passes through the Taubried to the west and by the fish ladder at the hydroelectric plant. You can use these features to help choose a route. Conditions on site may change.

Cycling: through Ellzee or in the Stoffenried Forest

The Günztal Cycle Route is around 92 kilometres long. It starts in Günzach in the Ostallgäu region, ends where the Günz flows into the Danube at Günzburg, and also passes Ellzee. This offers a different kind of tour planning from trails that start in the village: Ellzee lies along a longer cycling route whose endpoints are far apart.

Two other details are useful for rides in the area: the continuous cycle path along the B16 provides access to Krumbach to the south and Günzburg to the north. Stoffenried: village pond and district heritage museum

The village pond lies in the centre of Stoffenried and measures about 120 × 100 metres. You can take a short walk around it. The traditional pond festival is held in the pond area every year at the end of July; the exact dates may vary. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the date for the relevant year.

The Stoffenried District Heritage Museum offers a glimpse into rural working and living conditions of the past. In the Sölde, a former smallholding dating from around 1880, you can see fully furnished living rooms and chambers, a stable, and a barn with agricultural tools. The former Pfründhäusel was built in 1798. It houses a small shoemaker’s workshop and a tiny rope-making workshop; in the living room, you can see how seagrass shoes were made.

The rope walk in the garden also offers a tangible glimpse into local craftsmanship: it was moved from Langenhaslach to Stoffenried in 1991. On activity days at the district heritage museum, children and adults can learn about regional traditions and, among other things, brew beer, bake bread, spin wool and twist ropes. Getting here and more local history

Ellzee has a stop on the Mittelschwaben Railway between Mindelheim, Krumbach and Günzburg. The station is very close to the starting point of the Günzstausee premium walking trail at Town Hall. Check current train times before travelling. This lets you plan your train journey and the start of the walking trail together, without assuming a particular connection.

Another historical landmark stands on the site of today’s church in Ellzee: a 200-year-old chapel once stood there. Together with the craft workshops and the relocated rope walk in Stoffenried, this site adds another perspective on Ellzee and its districts to the area’s trails and landscapes.
