Pilgrimage sites, signposted trails, and a snow-dependent ski trail give Aletshausen its distinctive character. In Haupeltshofen stands the pilgrimage chapel of the Visitation of Mary, and at the eastern edge of Aletshausen is the Lourdes Grotto. Visitors can also choose between cycling and hiking trails or plan their stay around an annual traditional celebration. The winter ski trail, by contrast, comes with a clear condition: it is groomed only when there is sufficient snow.

Chapels and Pilgrimage History

The pilgrimage chapel of the Visitation of Mary in Haupeltshofen was built around 1618 as a rotunda around the miraculous image of Maria Maggiore. The rotunda form refers to the rounded structure; the miraculous image is the focal point of the chapel. The architectural form and approximate date of construction therefore provide two concrete points of reference for understanding this site within the local history of pilgrimage.

Another historical point of reference is the Lourdes Grotto at the eastern edge of Aletshausen. It was completed and consecrated in 1901. A comparison of the two sites therefore highlights different details: the chapel’s rotunda form and miraculous image, and the year the grotto was completed and consecrated. Together, these details show two distinct historical facets of Aletshausen and Haupeltshofen.

Cycling and Hiking Trails

The signposted Kammel Cycle Path runs through Haupeltshofen and Aletshausen in the municipality before continuing to Niederraunau. These place names give an indication of the route; check the local signs before setting off. This describes a different route from the one intended for hiking.

A signposted hiking trail passes through Gaismarkt, Winzer, and Wasserberg. These three place names identify it as a separate option for walking. When choosing between cycling and hiking, you can use the different route details for guidance: Haupeltshofen, Aletshausen, and Niederraunau are named for the Kammel Cycle Path, while Gaismarkt, Winzer, and Wasserberg are named for the hiking trail. The descriptions refer to different routes, not a shared stretch of trail.

Winter and an Annual Traditional Celebration

When there is sufficient snow, a ski trail is groomed near Winzer. The trailhead is on the Winzer–Aletshausen local connecting road, at the edge of the forest. Unlike the signposted cycling and hiking trails, the ski trail is explicitly dependent on snow conditions, so its use cannot be planned independently of the winter weather.

For the annual Feast of the Assumption in Aletshausen, women and men create a carpet of flowers from locally grown blossoms. The feast is a recurring traditional celebration, whereas the ski trail depends on suitable snow conditions. These details offer two different ways to time a stay: an annual celebration and a seasonal winter sports option.
