Burtenbach combines local history that can be dated precisely with a gravel pit lake developed for swimming, with a sunbathing lawn, jetty, toilets and parking areas. When looking for a hotel, it helps to distinguish Burtenbach itself from other excursion destinations in the wider Günzburg travel destination.

Town Hall, Castle and Former School

Burtenbach’s present-day town hall was built in 1558 for 2,000 gulden. The castle burned down in 1731 and was rebuilt in its present form by Franz Marquard Eusebius Freiherr Schertel von Burtenbach by 1740. Together, these dates trace two different chapters in the town’s history: the construction of the town hall in the 16th century and the rebuilding of the castle in the 18th century.

The municipal library also has its own history. It has been back in the former schoolhouse since September 1999. An additional room measuring 44 square metres was added in spring 2006, bringing the total area to around 110 square metres. This makes it possible to trace the former schoolhouse’s use in two stages: first as a school building, and later as the home of the municipal library, which was subsequently expanded.

Swimming Lake at the Edge of Town

A gravel pit lake lies north of the road at the western edge of Burtenbach, on the GZ 1 district road towards Kemnat. It has been developed as a swimming lake with a sunbathing lawn, jetty, toilets and parking areas. Check the current conditions on site before visiting.

More Excursion Destinations in the Wider Günzburg Travel Destination

The wider Günzburg travel destination offers other cultural and natural attractions, each rooted in its own location. Maria Vesperbild near Ziemetshausen is considered the largest pilgrimage site in Bavarian Swabia. Every year, 400,000 to 500,000 pilgrims visit the miraculous image of Our Lady of Sorrows. A Way of the Cross leads from the pilgrimage church to the Fatima Grotto in the nearby woods. The grotto was built in 1957 and restored in 2011; it contains more than 1,000 votive plaques bearing words of thanks and accounts of help received from the Mother of God. The site therefore has a distinctly religious focus.

Ichenhausen and Burgau offer different museum themes. The Bavarian School Museum in Ichenhausen traces the development of education over thousands of years. It includes a historic classroom that once accommodated around 50 children. The Museum of the City of Burgau presents the town’s history from the Middle Ages to the recent past across two floors and covers more than 700 square metres. Together, these museums offer a way to compare the history of education with a broad look at the history of a town. Check current opening hours before planning a museum visit.

Hiking and Water Sports in the Region

The hiking trails in the wider Günzburg travel destination also vary in length and route type. The DonAuwald Hiking Trail is the first premium hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia and runs for around 60 kilometres between Günzburg and Schwenningen. The DonauHänge is an 18.5-kilometre circular trail through the hillside forest between Günzburg and Offingen. The information about trail length and circular routes can help you make an initial selection; check current trail conditions before setting off.

In Thannhausen, Turncable Wakepark offers wakeboarding and water skiing. Courses are available for beginners and advanced participants, as well as individuals and groups. Check operating days and course availability in advance.
