The “Diebstein” hiking trail (No. 67) starts at the tourist office in Thurmansbang and passes along Puchberger Straße, through Finkenthal and by the Buchwiesweiher pond below Diebstein, continuing towards Bründlkapelle chapel. It then leads back to Thurmansbang. The trail is approximately 4.5 km long.
Hiking trails by length and difficulty
The municipality of Thurmansbang also offers ten recommended terrain health trails with varying levels of difficulty. The scale ranges from 1 (easiest trail) to 10 (most demanding). This means the trails can be viewed according to two different criteria: the approximate length is given for the Diebstein Trail, while the terrain health trails are graded by difficulty. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
Culture and relaxation nearby
The Schartenkirchlein chapel stands in Solla, a district of Thurmansbang. It was the most historically significant building in the former municipality of Solla. A fortified structure once stood on this site: the castle of the noble family of Scharten. The chapel is said to have been its castle chapel. It is a medieval complex of the kind found in rural churches.
The spa garden beside the church in Thurmansbang has a climate pavilion that provides a sheltered place for fresh-air reclining therapy, protected from wind and rain. The lawn is used for controlled sunbathing (heliotherapy). These two distinct offerings complement the area’s trail themes: medieval architecture in Solla and outdoor treatments in the spa garden.
Fishing at three bodies of water
Fishing is permitted in Thurmansbang at Buchwiesweiher pond, Ebenreuther See lake and Dreiburgensee lake. Check the relevant permits and local conditions in advance.
Freyung-Grafenau: nature and culture in the wider travel destination
The wider travel destination of Freyung-Grafenau has other distinct nature and culture attractions. The Bavarian Forest National Park extends into the district of Freyung-Grafenau and opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. The 2024 zoning map designates 75.37 percent of its area as natural zones.
In the Buchberger Leite wild-stream gorge, steep rock ridges force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deeply constricted channel. Remnants of primeval forest have survived in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woodlands. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail, with information boards and an accompanying brochure, runs through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai.
The region’s cultural history also leads to Freyung. Built around 1700, the Schramlhaus is now the oldest farmhouse in Freyung and, in its original condition, one of the oldest in the district of Freyung-Grafenau. It houses the Wolfsteiner local history museum and more than one hundred original examples of reverse-glass painting, a form of religious folk art. Freyung-Grafenau is located in the tri-border region of Bavaria, Bohemia and Austria.
