Schöfweg offers two clearly distinct starting points for planning a trip: hiking on a trail with a specified length and winter sports in Langfurth. The village lies on the ridge of the Sonnenwald below the 1,010-metre-high Brotjacklriegel, whose distinctive transmission tower is visible from far away. This makes it easy to get your bearings by starting with the village’s location, then choosing between trails, the village itself and seasonal activities.
Location and village character
In the village centre, the parish church of Maria, Mother of Sorrows is a striking granite building. It complements the Brotjacklriegel as a landmark in the landscape with a specific point of reference in the village. Together, these two features show different sides of Schöfweg: its location on the ridge of the Sonnenwald and a defining building in the centre.
Hiking: from the Turmweg to the Goldsteig
For hikers who want to estimate distance and time, the Turmweg Mitterdorf/Schöfweg–Brotjacklriegel is a precisely measured option: it is 2.5 kilometres long and takes about 45 minutes on foot. The trail is considered easy and is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. The walking time is a guide for the hike itself and helps you weigh this route against other plans for the day.
Schöfweg also has an extensive, well-signposted network of hiking trails and connects to the premium hiking trail “Goldsteig”. The Sonnenwald adventure trail is linked to the Goldsteig from Schöfweg via connecting trail No. 35. This provides different ways to orient yourself: the Turmweg has a stated length and approximate walking time, while the links to the hiking network and Goldsteig put it in the context of longer hiking routes. There is also a hedge educational trail in Allhartsmais.
Winter sports in Langfurth
Schöfweg’s ski area is located in the district of Langfurth. It has seven lifts, two of which are equipped with floodlighting and snowmaking. Facilities also include a children’s area, a ski school and a fun park for snowboarders. As details may vary by season, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.
Cross-country skiing is another winter option: 23 kilometres of groomed trails are available in Schöfweg and the surrounding area. Their availability depends on winter conditions. When planning, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the ski area in Langfurth, with its lift facilities, and cross-country trails, which are only available when conditions are suitable.
More trails and regional context
There are natural attractions in the municipal districts beyond the hiking routes mentioned above: Haunstein is home to a biotope. Together with the hedge educational trail in Allhartsmais, it adds two specific places to the selection, distinct from the longer hiking connections. This means Schöfweg’s character can be explored not only through a single route but also through its named natural and hiking destinations.
The Bavarian Forest National Park extends into the district of Freyung-Grafenau, the wider travel region. It opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. In the zoning map dated 2024, 75.37 percent of its area is designated as natural zones.
Another distinct example in Freyung-Grafenau is the Buchberger Leite: an eight-kilometre themed hiking trail with information boards and an accompanying brochure runs through the wild stream gorge between Freyung and Ringelai. Steep rock ridges narrow the gravel- and cascade-rich Wolfsteiner Ohe; remnants of primeval forest remain in the gorge woodlands. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels cut into the rock and above-ground canals bear witness to centuries of human activity.
