Neureichenau offers a variety of options for a stay: forest-related attractions and a museum dedicated to Adalbert Stifter, winter hiking trails, and rock formations nearby. When planning, it is worth sorting the available options according to your interests. A short circular trail around the Riedelsbach Reservoir, a longer hike to the Dreisessel and the guest card each offer a very different experience.

Forest and culture in Neureichenau

The Rosenberger Gut is home to the “Adalbert Stifter and the Forest” Museum, dedicated to the poet and painter Adalbert Stifter. Its name connects Stifter with the subject of forests; its dedication makes the museum a cultural destination for anyone interested in the writer and artist.

The Waldstreifzug (Forest Trail) offers another way to explore the subject of forests. Ten themed stations along the route introduce different aspects of experiencing forests and using them sustainably. The focus is therefore on different questions: the museum is dedicated to Adalbert Stifter, while the Forest Trail stations explore forests and their use. The ten stations give the route a thematic structure, without requiring a specific walking time.

Rock formations and winter hiking trails

Nearby, Klausgupf rises to 929 metres and is a rock formation with views over the municipalities of the Three-Country Border region. From Neureichenau, it can be reached via Michelklause. Hochstein is also nearby: the 1,332-metre-high rock formation is part of the Dreisessel massif and offers distant views towards Bohemia. Directly below Hochstein stands a memorial chapel to Johann Nepomuk Neumann, Bishop of Philadelphia, who was canonised in 1963.

Two routes with different details are available for winter walks. The route around the Riedelsbach Reservoir is one kilometre long. The winter hiking trail to the Dreisessel is three kilometres long, takes about an hour and leads to Dreisesselberg. This makes it possible to plan based on the stated distance and, for the Dreisessel trail, also on the approximate duration; winter conditions may vary.

Take the guest card to Dreisesselberg

Guests receive the guest card from their accommodation provider in the Dreisessel municipality of Neureichenau. During their stay in Neureichenau, it serves as a ticket for an unlimited number of journeys on the route from Neureichenau to Dreisesselberg and back. If you are planning to take the winter hiking trail there, you can factor this benefit into your plans. Before travelling, check the current service on the route and the applicable conditions.

Freyung-Grafenau as the wider region

Beyond Neureichenau, the Freyung-Grafenau destination offers further nature and cultural attractions. Bavarian Forest National Park extends into the district of Freyung-Grafenau and opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. The 2024 zoning map designates 75.37 percent of its area as natural zones.

In the Buchberger Leite wild-stream gorge, steep rock barriers force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deeply constricted channel. Remnants of primeval forest have survived in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woodlands. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail runs through the gorge between Freyung and Ringelai; information boards and an accompanying brochure complement the route. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels cut into the rock and above-ground canals also bear witness to centuries of human activity there.

The district’s cultural history also has its own distinctive highlights. In Freyung stands the Schramlhaus, built around 1700. Today, it is the oldest traditional rural homestead in the town and, in terms of its original character, one of the oldest in the district of Freyung-Grafenau. It houses the Wolfstein Local Heritage Museum and more than a hundred original examples of reverse glass painting, a form of religious folk art. These regional attractions complement a visit to Neureichenau with other landscapes and cultural themes within Freyung-Grafenau.
