Hilltop trails, Main River scenery and historic sites reveal different sides of Ebensfeld. When planning your trip, it’s worth distinguishing between routes by length and character, while also making time for the landscape and the town’s history.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Veitsberg Hilltop Trail is a circular hike of about 16 kilometres. It passes through Ebensfeld and by St. Veit’s Chapel, Dittersbrunn, Burgstall, the Küpser Linden Tree, Kümmel, the Kümmelbach stream and Prächting. The many stops along the way make for a wide-ranging route through the town and its surroundings.

The “Küpser Linden Tree and Ansberg” tour offers a different option: It starts in Dittersbrunn, is of moderate difficulty, covers 10.1 kilometres and takes three and a half hours. This makes it possible to compare two designated hiking options by length; a duration is also given for this tour. The Keltenweg E starts at the hiking car park in Ebensfeld, passes over Ansberg and through Kümmel, and loops around the Prächtinger Pferdchen. It offers scenic views and leads, among other places, to a forest with a burial mound field. The Kellbachtaler Hilltop Trail also starts and ends in Prächting. Which of these routes suits your plans depends in part on whether you prefer a stated duration, a hilltop trail or historic traces.

The Main, hills and views

The municipality is shaped by gentle rolling hills, quiet valleys, forests, meadows and fields, streams, lakes and the Main River. From Ansberg, also known as Veitsberg, there are views over the Main Valley. The trees themselves are a central feature of the scene at St. Veit’s Chapel: it is surrounded by lime trees that are more than 200 years old.

The Main River landscape can also be explored through different themes. The renaturalisation of the Main in Ebensfeld created a waterscape that once again provides habitat for rare animals and plants. The Maingezwitscherpfad offers a close-to-nature experience of the ecologically valuable extension of the Main. This brings hilltops and views together with a landscape whose distinctive character is tied to the river and its habitat.

Market history and historic sites

A charter issued by Prince-Bishop Friedrich III of AufseĂź granted Ebensfeld general market rights in 1426. At the time, the town was allowed to hold a market three times a year. The traditional Apple Market offers a different focus, with local producers selling products made from locally grown fruit.

The history of Hankirche, above Prächting, also goes back a long way: the church is documented as far back as 1338. Pilgrimages to the church took place both before and after the Reformation. Together with St. Veit’s Chapel and the lime trees, which are more than 200 years old, it forms a distinct cultural and historical highlight alongside the hiking trails.

Ebensfeld as a starting point for planning

Ebensfeld is known as the gateway to the Gottesgarten. You can take its different highlights into account when choosing a hotel in Ebensfeld, without having to plan a fixed daily itinerary.

Lichtenfels as a destination in its own right

Lichtenfels also offers its own cultural and natural attractions. The Bamberger Tor and Kronacher Tor gates remain in the old town of Lichtenfels, and parts of the old town wall are still visible. The Pfad der Flechtkultur (Basketry Culture Trail) connects Lichtenfels and Michelau along scenic, nature-focused paths through the Main floodplains. Its 23 information boards explore the history and tradition of basket-making, the basket industry and basket trading along the Upper Main. The Korbmarkt (Basket Market) is also held in Lichtenfels every year on the third weekend in September.
