Bad Staffelstein offers a range of ways to spend your stay: town history, thermal brine experiences, walking paths and cycling tours that start and end in the town. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bad Staffelstein, it helps to first consider which of these experiences you want to shape your trip. Each attraction and activity offers something different, from the historic town hall to the interactive mathematics trail.

Spa Gardens, Brine Gradation Towers and Thermal Brine

In the spa gardens of Bad Staffelstein, you can breathe in brine as you stroll, with the brine dispersed through the gradation towers. Admission to the park is free, and it is open around the clock. The gradation towers have their own seasonal schedule: they are open daily and free of charge from Easter until late autumn; the start date depends on when Easter falls. This makes it possible to plan visits to the park and gradation towers separately.

Another way to experience brine is at the Obermain Therme in Bad Staffelstein, where you can bathe in thermal brine. The spa has Bavaria’s warmest and strongest thermal brine. While a walk in the spa gardens can include a visit to the gradation towers during their seasonal opening period, bathing is the focus at the spa. Which of these two experiences matters more to you can help shape your day’s plans.

Town History at the Museum and Town Hall

The Bad Staffelstein Town Museum has been housed in the former schoolhouse, built in 1856, since 1990. Its exhibits range from archaeological finds from the Staffelberg and documents on the town’s development to religious artefacts. There are also minerals and fossils from the Franconian Jura, information on the origins of the Obermain Therme, and a dedicated section on the calculating master Adam Ries(e). The exhibition thus combines local development, natural history and individual personalities rather than focusing on a single subject.

The town hall also tells the story of the town. Today it is considered a landmark; much of its ground-floor masonry dates back to the late Middle Ages. The building was affected by the town fires of 1473 and 1684. The museum and the town hall offer different historical perspectives: the museum brings together collections and subject areas, while the building’s long history can be read directly in the town hall itself.

Explore on Foot, Set Off by Bike

The Adam-Riese Adventure Trail combines mathematics and town history in an interactive discovery tour. Ten stations focus on the digits 1 to 9 and 0. Puzzles and hands-on activities invite visitors to calculate, experiment and explore. Stations are located, among other places, at Aqua Riese, in the spa gardens and at the Obermain Therme, around the railway station and along Bahnhofstraße. Others are by the town wall behind the town museum and at the Tourist Information Office. The trail’s themes and stations offer a different way to engage with the town’s history.

Another walking route leads from the spa area and the Obermain Therme along the Lauterbach into the town centre: the Sculpture Trail. It features the works “Apollo and Daphne” and “Rising”. This gives you a choice of different themes for a walk through Bad Staffelstein: interactive stations combining mathematics and history, or a route linking sculptures with the course of the Lauterbach.

Six selected cycling tours start and end right in Bad Staffelstein. This makes the town a good starting point if you’re looking for a tour that begins and ends in the same place. Unlike the walking routes, the focus here is on choosing one of the selected cycling tours; the available information gives their number and starting and finishing points, but not individual distances or ride times.

Cultural Events in Bad Staffelstein

The lakeside stage in the spa gardens is a key venue for a wide-ranging programme of cultural events. The annual Beer Brewers’ Festival is a recurring event: it takes place on August 15, the Catholic feast of the Assumption of Mary, in the market square by the half-timbered town hall. If you’d like to plan your trip around an event, keep these two different settings in mind: the lakeside stage in the spa gardens and the festival at the town hall.

A Special Focus on Baskets in Lichtenfels

Lichtenfels also offers a distinctive perspective on the culture and landscape of the Obermain region. The old town has retained its characteristically Franconian charm; the Bamberg Gate and Kronach Gate are still standing, and parts of the old town wall remain visible. The Lichtenfels Basket Market takes place every year on the third weekend in September. The 14-kilometre Flechtkultur Trail offers another perspective: it connects Lichtenfels and Michelau along nature trails through the Main floodplains. Its 23 information panels cover the history and tradition of basket making, the basket industry and the basket trade along the Obermain. This gives Lichtenfels its own distinctive focus, different from Bad Staffelstein’s emphasis on town history, thermal brine and walking routes.
