The history of the church in Marktgraitz has a significant turning point: after the 1958 fire, the portal wall and choir of the old church were incorporated into the new building. Historic local features, mills and trails offer other perspectives on the town. When planning your visit, you can consider architectural history, landscape and outdoor activities as distinct focal points.

Church and Local Features

The old church had a Romanesque tower and portal, as well as a Gothic choir. In 1723, the nave was raised. After the church fire of 1958, only the portal wall and choir of the old church were incorporated into the new building. The newly built church was consecrated in 1959 by Archbishop Dr. Josef Schneider. This sequence traces the story from the older architectural elements through the fire to the new building and its consecration.

Marktplatz is home to the Gerichtslinde (Court Lime Tree), two school buildings and a house with a corner column. The Treubelhaus on Lettenreuther StraĂźe also has a corner column; it is also a half-timbered house. The gatehouse stands on SchulstraĂźe, and a statue of St. John stands on JohannesstraĂźe. The Schneeberg Chapel is located in the direction of Lettenreuth. These architectural and local features are spread across several named squares and streets.

The Steinach, Rodach and Graatzer Berg

The Steinach rises north of Marktgraitz in the foothills of the Thuringian Mountains. At the confluence of the Steinach and Rodach in Marktgraitz is a sawmill with a waterwheel. The Old Mill is located by the Steinach bridge. Both mills offer a distinctive connection to the town’s history on the water.

Graatzer Berglein offers a magnificent panoramic view. A prehistoric section fortification is also located on Graatzer Berg. These similarly named landscape features represent different aspects: the panoramic view from the small hill and the fortification on Graatzer Berg.

A hiking trail passes Marktgraitz’s Marktplatz, descends to Hauptstraße and climbs up Graatzer Berg on the opposite side. The Three Rivers Trail—Rodach, Steinach and Main—is approximately 24.8 km long and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. Different points of reference can help you choose: the local hiking trail has a specific sequence of waypoints, while the approximate length and available modes of travel are important for the Three Rivers Trail.

Lichtenfels: Old Town and Basket-Weaving Culture

Lichtenfels’ old town has retained its typically Franconian character. The Bamberger Tor and Kronacher Tor have been preserved, and parts of the old town wall are still visible. The Flechtkultur Trail connects Lichtenfels and Michelau along nature-rich paths through the Main floodplains. The 14-kilometre route features 23 information panels on the history and traditions of basket-making, the basket industry and basket trading in the Obermain region. The focus here is on old-town history and basket-weaving culture, while Marktgraitz offers its own themes, such as church architecture, mills and local trails.

The Lichtenfels Basket Market takes place every year on the third weekend in September. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the specific event dates.
