The Slate and Tile Museum and the art library offer different cultural experiences in Dörfles-Esbach: one focuses on roofing trades and historical classroom practices, while the other lends regional art.
Slate and Tile Museum
The museum displays exhibits on roofing with slate and tiles, as well as old tools and objects from the roofing trade. A faithfully recreated classroom from the 1940s complements the collection. Children can try writing with slate pencils on slate boards. Visits are possible by appointment, so please arrange your visit in advance.
Art Library at the Civic Center
The art library is located in the civic center at Parkstraße 1 in Dörfles-Esbach. It offers original paintings and photographs by artists from the region for loan. Unlike a museum visit, the focus here is on borrowing works of art. If you plan to visit the art library, check the current visitor information before your visit.
More attractions in the wider Coburg destination
The German Toy Industry Museum in Neustadt bei Coburg tells the story of Germany’s toy industry, from home-based work to factory production. Its international collection of traditional costume dolls comprises around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries. Hands-on activities and a museum treasure hunt add further things for visitors to do.
In Ahorn, the Alte Schäferei is a Baroque estate sheep farm built in 1713. Exhibits include tools and equipment from farming and crafts, painted furniture, and other artifacts from the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Also in Ahorn, the Panorama Trail is 7 km long, takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and is suitable for strollers. This gives visitors a choice of both historical exhibits and a route with a stated duration.
The old town of Seßlach is enclosed by a completely preserved city wall with defensive towers and three gates. From April to September, regular guided tours of the old town take place every Sunday at 2 p.m.; registration is not required. Check the latest information when planning your visit. The Marterl Trail around Seßlach offers a different focus: on a hike, it provides insights into roadside religious monuments, their history, and their religious significance.
In Rödental, the focus shifts from historic sites to the landscape: the Froschgrundsee is a reservoir served by cycling and hiking trails that also run around it; a nature reserve borders the lake. Rosenau Palace in Rödental was the birthplace of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. A nature trail also passes by Lauterburg Castle.
There is also a named bus connection for traveling to another destination in the wider Coburg area: bus route 8301 serves WildPark Schloss Tambach. From the “Tambach, Weitramsdorf” stop, it is a short walk to the park. Check the timetable before traveling.
