The Veste Coburg and Ehrenburg Palace give a trip to Coburg a distinct cultural and historical focus. The city also has museums, churches and the market square, where the city’s history meets the bustle of the market. Which of these themes you want to explore in greater depth can shape the pace of your stay: from a visit to the Veste and a stroll through the old town to a morning at the weekly market.

Veste Coburg: Castle Complex, Collections and Luther

The medieval Veste dates back to 1056. Its collections offer different ways to explore art and cultural history: works by Cranach, Dürer and Grünewald are on display at the Veste. The Veste Museum also includes an engraving collection, as well as collections of hunting weapons, glass, carriages and sleighs.

Martin Luther is also connected to the history of the site: during the Diet of Augsburg, he stayed at the Veste for six months in 1530. Among the objects exhibited there is the Hedwig Beaker, which once belonged to Luther. The dates place these stories in different contexts without conflating them.

The Coburg Natural History Museum is the largest natural history museum in northern Bavaria and has the status of a state museum. Those who want to include natural history in their museum itinerary will find a different subject alongside the historical collections.

Ehrenburg Palace and the History of Coburg

From 1547 to 1918, Ehrenburg Palace served as the Coburg dukes’ town residence. In the 19th century, under Duke Ernst I, it acquired its present Neo-Gothic façade, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Its long use as a residence and the later façade design mark different stages in the building’s history.

The market square also provides a way to trace the city’s development over time: it was laid out in the late 13th century and paved by the 16th century. At its centre stands a monumental statue of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, erected in 1865. Another cultural and historical landmark is St. Moriz Church, with a Renaissance tomb for the dukes and an alabaster epitaph for Duke Johann Friedrich the Middle. The Church of the Holy Cross was built in 1401.

Weekly Market, Bratwurst and the Old Town

A weekly market is held on Coburg’s market square on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. It offers fresh regional produce, flowers and handmade goods. If you want to plan your visit around the market, check the latest information before you travel. Coburg bratwurst is traditionally grilled over a fire of pine cones and can be tried fresh from the grill on the market square; check locally whether it is being served that day.

The city’s routes also offer plenty of points of interest for a walk. The arcades on Coburg’s Schlossplatz are designed in the style of the late Italian Renaissance and form a kind of boundary with the foot of the Hofgarten; they invite you to stroll and linger. Concerts and festivals take place on Schlossplatz during the summer months. Coburg Marketing offers guided tours of the old town; check availability with the provider.

Planning Visits and Combining Themes

The small archaeological excavation museum in the churchyard presents the building history and excavation records of the eastern churchyard, objects found there and a reconstruction drawing of the site. Visits are possible only by prior arrangement during the city’s opening hours. Contact the Coburg City Archives to arrange a time, and confirm the arrangements before your visit.

Free app-based audio guides from Coburg Marketing cover the Veste Coburg, Ehrenburg Palace, the Hofgarten and the old town. The app offering may change. This makes it possible to include several cultural and historical themes in your plans, while each place retains its own stories and areas of focus.

Another Museum in the Wider Coburg Destination

In the wider Coburg destination, the German Toy Industry Museum in Neustadt bei Coburg traces the history of Germany’s toy industry, from home-based work to factory production. Its international collection of traditional costume dolls comprises around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries. Hands-on activities and a museum trail round out the visit. This adds a distinct focus to the wider destination, different in subject from the castles, residential histories and collections in Coburg.
