Ahorn combines castle history and farming culture with a rolling hilly landscape and wide-ranging views. Ahorn Castle, the Coburg Region Agricultural Equipment Museum and a network of hiking trails spanning more than 40 kilometres give your stay a variety of possible focuses. Consider whether you would like to devote most of your time to historic sites, the museum or hiking.

Castle history and local memorial sites

Ahorn Castle was built in the Renaissance style in 1555 by Joachim von Rosenau, following the Peasants’ War. The remains of an older castle were used as the building site. This sequence gives the castle a clear historical connection: the present building stands on the site of an earlier fortification and is one of Ahorn’s notable cultural attractions.

The Coburg Region Agricultural Equipment Museum is located on the grounds and in the buildings of the former estate sheep farm belonging to Ahorn Castle. The Old Sheep Farm in Ahorn is a Baroque estate sheep farm built in 1713. Visitors interested in the castle’s historic setting will find another place where Ahorn’s architectural history can be seen. The museum offers educational activity programmes for school classes and visitor groups by prior arrangement. Other offerings include guided tours, holiday programmes and children’s birthday parties, as well as programmes for organising excursions, family celebrations and club events.

Memorial sites and waymarkers also tell the story of Ahorn. Carls-Ruhe is a memorial to Baron Carl Hartmann von Erffa, who died in a car accident near Dietersdorf in 1911. The Stone Table was probably erected between 1820 and 1823 as a memorial when the present-day Alte StraĂźe from Ahorn to Coburg was built. Both the date and the reason for its erection are part of the traditional account and are explicitly regarded as probable.

The Alte Schäferei waymarker was created in 2017 shortly beyond the Coburg Region Agricultural Equipment Museum “Alte Schäferei”. It was created as a symbol of the bond with Ahorn’s partner municipalities of Eisfeld and Irnding-Donnersbachtal. The historic Hohenstein Landscape Park, meanwhile, was designed as a late Romantic park. Together, these places offer different points of interest for a stay focused more on memorial sites, architectural history or historic garden design.

Hilly landscape and hiking trails

Ahorn lies in a rolling hilly landscape with wide-ranging views. The municipality’s network comprises more than 40 kilometres of newly designated hiking trails and three circular routes. It opened in autumn 2013.

The wider Coburg destination also has a specific hiking trail in Ahorn: the Panorama Trail is 7 kilometres long, takes 1.5 to 2 hours and is suitable for pushchairs. The stated duration helps with planning your time; suitability for pushchairs is a separate practical detail about the route. The Panorama Trail and the larger network can be considered on the basis of their different descriptions, without assuming that they are the same route.

Culture in the wider Coburg destination

The wider Coburg destination also offers a range of cultural highlights. The Old Sheep Farm in Ahorn displays equipment used in farming and crafts, painted furniture and other artefacts from the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. In Neustadt bei Coburg, the Museum of the German Toy Industry focuses on a different subject: it traces the history of the German toy industry, from cottage industry to factory production.

The museum in Neustadt’s international collection of traditional costume dolls comprises around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries. Interactive activities and a museum trail add to the visit. The collections therefore have clearly different focuses: Ahorn highlights, among other things, artefacts related to farming and crafts, while Neustadt explores the toy industry and traditional costume dolls. This distinction can help when choosing other cultural destinations in the wider Coburg area.

Thinking about these options together can help you choose the places and themes you want to include in your trip before looking for hotels.
