Mönchsroth offers several points of interest for a trip combining local history and time by the water. When looking for a holiday apartment, deciding what you want to focus on can help you plan: Would you mainly like to explore churches and historical connections, or are ponds and the outdoor pool more important? The wider Ansbach destination also offers cultural and nature-related attractions that broaden the regional perspective.

Churches, Local History and a Glimpse of Roman Times

The origins of the village church of St. Oswald and Aegidius are thought to date back to the 9th century. At that time, a church dedicated to St. Oswald was built in the royal hunting grounds of the Ellwanger Forest. This connection between early church history and the hunting grounds gives the town a historical significance that extends beyond the church building itself.

The monastery church of St. Peter and Paul provides a different point of reference: it stands above the Rothach and is surrounded by a cemetery. Together, the churches offer two different perspectives on local history: the village church’s presumed early origins and the monastery church’s location above the Rothach.

A walk-in tower stump was built on the southern edge of town in 1985/86, evoking the Roman frontier fortifications. The tower stump therefore offers a different focus from the churches: here, the emphasis is on the idea of Roman frontier fortifications.

Two Different Places by the Water

The Sägweiher, covering around three hectares, lies west of Mönchsroth. It serves as a rainwater retention basin and is also a local recreation area and a popular fishing spot. This dual role sets it apart from a place devoted solely to swimming: the pond combines a practical purpose with recreational and fishing opportunities.

The family-friendly, solar-heated Limes outdoor pool in Mönchsroth offers swimming fun for all ages. The two waterside destinations are not interchangeable: the Sägweiher offers recreation and fishing alongside its function as a retention basin, while the outdoor pool is the place for swimming. This lets you choose between different water-based activities when planning your trip.

More to Explore in the Wider Ansbach Destination

In the wider Ansbach destination, the Franconia Literature Trail offers a literary experience. The 2.2 km accessible circular trail runs around the town fortifications of Wolframs-Eschenbach. Along the way, 15 information boards introduce authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works deal with Franconia. The circular trail and its information boards thus offer a literary perspective spanning different eras.

The “wiegen & messen” (weighing & measuring) museum in Königshofen, also in the wider Ansbach destination, displays more than 4,000 exhibits. These include historical scales and their associated weights, cubit measures, folding rulers, and vessels used to measure grain. Unlike the Literature Trail, the museum focuses on measurements, weights and their historical uses.

The Frankenhöhe Nature Park is also part of the wider Ansbach destination. It covers approximately 1,100 km² and lies within the districts of Ansbach and Neustadt a.d. Aisch–Bad Windsheim, as well as the independent city of Ansbach. The nature park is the source of the Altmühl, Fränkische Rezat and Zenn rivers. It provides information on hiking and cycling trails, as well as ranger-led tours, and is particularly well suited to recreation thanks to its landscape. Alongside local churches, the tower stump and waterside spots, the region thus offers a choice of nature-related attractions on a broader scale.
