The Aurach Vogtei was built in 1511 on the site of an old moated castle dating back to the 10th century. This historical reference offers a distinctive introduction to the municipality of Aurach, whose themes range from local history and rural domestic culture to biotopes and exercise. Visitors planning a stay around their interests in culture and nature will find a range of focal points here, which they can prioritise according to their personal interests.

Local History and Rural Domestic Culture

The Vogtei Museum presents information on the local history of Aurach and Weinberg, as well as on 19th-century rural domestic culture. Also on display are farming implements, photographs and other objects. Visits are possible by prior request only. The topics thus range from the history of the localities to the objects and ways of living of a particular era. Wahrberg Castle is also part of the municipality of Aurach.

Biotopes and Exercise in the Municipality

According to the biotope survey, 290 hectares of biotopes worthy of protection have been designated in the municipality of Aurach. The hay meadows and wet meadows of the AltmĂĽhl valley are home to rare plant communities and orchid species. Alongside specific historical topics, the focus therefore also falls on a landscape with distinctive plant communities.

The Aurach Fitness Trail starts at the Aurach Kneipp facility, is 4 kilometres long and has 13 stations. Its distance and number of stations give a clear sense of the exercise opportunities it offers. Unlike the biotopes, whose distinctive feature is their plant life, the trail provides a separate, activity-focused attraction.

More Themes in the Wider Ansbach Travel Region

The wider Ansbach travel region also offers its own cultural and landscape attractions. In Wolframs-Eschenbach, the Literary Trail of Franconia is a 2.2-kilometre circular route, developed to be barrier-free, that runs around the town fortifications. Its 15 information panels feature authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works address Franconia. Visitors interested in literary history will find a themed trail here as a different kind of cultural offering.

The “wiegen & messen” (Weighing & Measuring) Museum in Königshofen displays more than 4,000 exhibits, including historical scales and their weights, cubits, yardsticks and vessels for measuring grain. Its focus on measuring and weighing objects distinguishes it from the local history and domestic culture themes of the Vogtei Museum. The different museums in the wider Ansbach travel region can thus be distinguished by their respective subject areas.

For a broader natural landscape, there is Frankenhöhe Nature Park. It covers around 1,100 square kilometres and lies within the districts of Ansbach and Neustadt a.d. Aisch–Bad Windsheim, as well as the independent city of Ansbach. The nature park is the source area for the Altmühl, the Franconian Rezat and the Zenn rivers. Its landscape makes it particularly suitable for recreation; it also provides information on hiking and cycling trails, as well as ranger-led tours. These regional themes broaden the perspective on Aurach to include further interests in nature and culture, without conflating the municipality’s offerings with the features of the wider travel region.
