Wald can be explored through two distinct hiking options and a dedicated art theme. The Pond Trail has a specified length; the Northern Route passes through two named forest areas. The KunstKonvent Gallery is another attraction. A separate look at the wider Sigmaringen destination reveals further cultural and landscape themes.
Hiking on Two Routes
The five-kilometre Pond Trail connects several historic monastery ponds in the municipality of Wald. The Rund um Wald (Northern Route) also passes through the Forstwald and Riedle protected forest; the route description starts at Wald Town Hall. The two trails can be distinguished by the information available about them: the Pond Trail has a specified length, while the Northern Route profile identifies the forest areas.
On the free cycling and hiking map of the Northern Lake Constance Holiday Region, the Northern Route is marked “W1”. As map markings may change, check the latest map before setting out.
Art and a Regional Route
The KunstKonvent Gallery has been located at the “Neue Kunst am Ried” site since 2017. It presents changing exhibitions as well as a large sculpture on permanent display. The art theme thus combines changing exhibitions with a permanently displayed work, offering a distinct attraction alongside the hiking routes.
As a regional cultural reference, Wald lies on the western route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. This named themed route is another point of reference for understanding the area, alongside its local hiking and art attractions.
Sigmaringen in the Wider Destination
Within the wider Sigmaringen destination, Sigmaringen Castle is a cultural and historical highlight in its own right. It developed from a medieval castle into a princely residence and is considered a landmark of the town. Castle tours explore almost 1,000 years of Hohenzollern family history; the private collection of weapons comprises around 3,000 items. Sigmaringen’s old town lies at the foot of Hohenzollern Castle.
The Round Tower is also among the historical attractions in the wider Sigmaringen destination: built as a defensive tower in the old town fortifications, it was converted into a local history museum in 1970. The Round Tower Local History Museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The Zündapp Museum at the Zoller-Hof brewery offers a different kind of collection. It displays more than 100 exhibits related to the Zündapp motorcycle brand and is located in the Marstall building at Fürst-Wilhelm-Straße 5–7 in Sigmaringen. Check opening hours and the address before your visit.
The landscape of the wider Sigmaringen destination lies in the Upper Danube Nature Park, on the edge of the Swabian Alb. Here, the Danube flows through a landscape shaped by towering rocks and forests. The five DonauFelsenLäufe are premium hiking trails in Sigmaringen and pass through the Danube Valley, the Schmeien Valley and the Lauchert Valley. The Danube Cycle Path also runs through Sigmaringen. This destination thus offers hiking trails through several valleys and a cycling route through the town as distinct ways to experience the landscape and get around.
