Veringenstadt brings together a town hall with a long history of municipal use, a local history museum featuring historical finds and memorabilia, and trails focused on the river and caves. The history of the Strüb family of painters is another part of its story. You can explore these different highlights according to your own interests.
Town Hall, Local History Museum and Painting
Built in 1415, Veringenstadt’s town hall is considered the oldest in Hohenzollern and has been in continuous municipal use. The town hall houses the local history museum, which displays Stone Age finds from the Neanderthals, as well as the witch’s shirt and instruments of torture from the 1680 witch trial of Anna Kramer, known as Bader-Ann. The exhibition thus takes visitors from prehistoric finds to a specific historical trial.
Strüb House was the former home and workshop of the Strüb family of painters. It presents faithful reproductions of the family’s paintings and medieval painting techniques—from making the paints to applying them to panels. Alongside the reproductions, the stages of the process on display offer insight into the materials and techniques of painting.
Castle Ruins, the Lauchert and Caves
Veringen Castle is a ruin on a high ridge encircled by the Lauchert, above St. Nicholas Parish Church. The hilltop castle was probably built between 1100 and 1130 by Count Marquard of the House of Veringen and was mentioned in 1134. The construction date and the written mention provide different points of reference for the history of the site.
The “Living Lauchert” riverside path follows the river in a semicircular loop around the historic old town, between the upper and lower Lauchert bridges. Information boards cover various topics relating to the river’s formation and use. The path combines a riverside route with insights into the Lauchert’s history.
Other trails have their own focus: the Zillenbiller circular trail passes historical sights in Veringenstadt. The cave trail leads to five large show caves and explores the idea that Neanderthals and cave bears once shared a habitat there. Some trails draw attention to the history of the town, while the cave trail focuses on its show caves and their prehistoric theme.
Hiking, Cycling and Guided Visits
The “In the Lauchert Valley” cycling and hiking map covers 26 hiking routes and 10 cycling tours. The routes are very well signposted and maintained by the Swabian Alb Association; the routes included on the map may be revised. The numbers listed give an overview of the different options for hiking and cycling.
The town and museum tour brings together several of these themes. It includes visits to the local history museum, the mountain school and Strüb House, information about Veringenstadt’s caves, and a walk along the “Living Lauchert” riverside path. The tour is available on request.
The former mountain school was extensively renovated and designed based on ideas by artist Ilse Wolf and her daughter Katja Morrison. The Count’s Hall and the Blue Hall provide space for exhibitions and all kinds of cultural events. These rooms add another cultural dimension to Veringenstadt’s museum and trail themes.
A Distinctive Highlight in the Wider Sigmaringen Destination
In the wider Sigmaringen destination, the town of Sigmaringen offers a distinct focus on its castle. Sigmaringen Castle developed from a medieval fortress into a princely residence and is considered a landmark of the town. Castle tours offer insights into almost 1,000 years of the history of the House of Hohenzollern. The castle is also home to a private collection of weapons comprising around 3,000 objects.
