The main village of Neufra lies in the Fehlatal and is surrounded by designated nature reserves. In winter, two cross-country ski loops are worth considering; in Freudenweiler, a historic chapel and the Schwandlich barbecue area offer different attractions. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether cross-country skiing should be the main focus or whether you would also like to explore cultural and historical sites in the municipality.

Cross-country skiing: comparing two loops

The Kohlloipe is a loop of about 2.1 km through woods and open areas; it starts by the Ledigen Kreuz. The Nachtloipe is a lit loop of about 2 km. When there is enough snow, it operates on weekdays from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm; its starting point is about 100 m beyond the sports and events hall.

The routes are similar in length, so their layout and timing matter more than the distance when choosing between them. The Kohlloipe runs through woods and open areas; for the Nachtloipe, its lighting and weekday operation, subject to snow conditions, are the key planning considerations. If you plan to use the Nachtloipe in the evening, it is a good idea to check the current snow conditions.

Chapel and barbecue area in Freudenweiler

The Franz Xaver Chapel is in Freudenweiler and was built in 1850. Its highlight is a 250-year-old, 60 cm statue of the Madonna and Child seated on a throne. The year it was built and the statue offer two specific points of interest at this cultural and historical site.

The Schwandlich barbecue area is just outside Freudenweiler and can be reached on foot or by car. The municipality asks visitors to register their use in advance. So if you plan to use the barbecue area, remember to take this step beforehand.

A closer look at the wider destination of Sigmaringen

In the wider destination of Sigmaringen, Sigmaringen Castle offers a distinct cultural and historical focus. It developed from a medieval castle into a princely residential palace and is considered a landmark of the city. Castle tours explore almost 1,000 years of Hohenzollern family history. The private arms collection contains about 3,000 objects.

The Runder Turm local history museum in Sigmaringen also offers insight into the city's history: the tower was built as a defensive tower in the old town fortifications and converted into a local history museum in 1970. The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The Zündapp Museum at the Zoller-Hof brewery displays more than 100 exhibits from the Zündapp motorcycle brand and is located in the Marstall building at Fürst-Wilhelm-Straße 5–7. Check opening hours and the location before visiting.

Annual events also help you choose when to visit Sigmaringen: on April 24, the Fidelis Festival includes a service at St. Johann parish church, followed by a candlelit procession through the city centre. The city festival takes place in the city centre every year on the last weekend in June; the exact programme may vary.
