Hiking Trails and Historic Sites

The 42-kilometer Unterkirnach Route starts in Unterkirnach, passes through the forest to Vöhrenbach, and follows the Brigach on the return leg. Check trail conditions before setting out. A 2019 report describes the history trail as 11.3 kilometers long, with 25 stops at historically significant former or existing buildings and sites; information boards are provided at the stops. The different route lengths and the historic focus of the stops can help you choose. Also check trail conditions and signage for the history trail.

Kirnach Mill and Local History Room

The historic Kirnach Mill was restored in the town center between 1995 and 1997. Regular guided tours introduce the mill and its history; check dates and availability before your visit. The local history room occupies two rooms in the Old School and focuses on local history and the history of orchestrions. You can try out historical techniques using examples there. Check visitor options in advance, as activities depend on opening arrangements.

Unterkirnach is connected to the origins of Black Forest orchestrion building through Carl Blessing, who was born here in 1769 and is considered a pioneer of orchestrion building. Alongside the history of the mill, you can explore local history and a distinctive focus on technology.

Talsee, Landscape and Play Barn

Talsee is formed where the Kirnach is dammed in the valley. A short circular trail leads around the lake; trail conditions may vary by season. The wild plant park offers a different perspective on the landscape: it recreates Black Forest landscapes and provides a refuge for endangered plants and small animals.

The play barn in Unterkirnach offers an indoor play option whatever the weather. It has more than 1,000 square meters of play space across three levels, including a ball pit and a roller slide. Operating details may change independently of this description; check them before planning a visit. Talsee and the wild plant park focus on nature, while the play barn offers weather-independent play.
