Dauchingen lies on the Baar Plateau; a southern slope drops steeply eastwards into the Neckar Valley. From Michelenwald, open views extend across the Baar to the southwestern edge of the Swabian Alb. Its location therefore brings together two distinct landscape features: the expanse of the plateau and the striking descent into the valley. If you choose a destination primarily for its scenery and views, these two features provide clear points of reference.

Elevation, valley and forest

The eastern parts of Dauchingen’s municipal forest lie mostly on steep, sometimes rocky slopes in the Neckar Valley and its side valleys. The municipal forest is considered an important local recreation area for residents. The eastern forest area lies within a landscape conservation area; 28 hectares are designated as protected forest. The Neckartäle within Dauchingen’s municipal area is also designated as a landscape conservation area. The 28 hectares refer to the designated protected forest; the recreational value applies to the municipal forest.

Nature experiences and trails

The Zaunstetten nature experience area is one of only eight nature experience areas recognised by the state of Baden-WĂĽrttemberg. Visitors can experience a variety of natural habitats along a discovery trail in Zaunstetten; information boards explain ecological relationships. This sets Zaunstetten apart from Michelenwald: there, the focus is on open views across the Baar, while here it is on habitats and their ecological connections.

The hiking details have different reference points: seven kilometres of the Neckar Trail pass through Dauchingen. The 290-kilometre Heidelberg–Black Forest–Lake Constance Trail also passes through the municipal area; 290 kilometres is its total length. Dauchingen also has 15 kilometres of signposted hiking trails. When planning, it is therefore important to distinguish between the Dauchingen section of the Neckar Trail and the entire 290-kilometre Heidelberg–Black Forest–Lake Constance Trail.

You can reach the Neckartäle via the K 5705 county road towards Deißlingen. Before the Neckar bridge, follow the sign to the hiking car park. Unlike the information on long-distance routes, this gives a specific access point for the valley area.

Townscape and getting here

St. Cäcilia Parish Church was built between 1844 and 1847. A prominent landmark, it stands on a hill at the centre of the settlement and rises visibly above Dauchingen’s skyline. It thus combines its construction date with a distinctive local landmark.

For drivers, Dauchingen’s location is straightforward: the town has direct access to the B 523, and the A 81 is about two kilometres away. If you are considering Dauchingen as a place to stay overnight, you can weigh its road connections as a factor alongside your interest in the landscape and hiking.

Hiking destinations in the Schwarzwald-Baar district

In the Schwarzwald-Baar district, the 109-kilometre cross-border premium hiking trail WasserWeltenSteig runs entirely through the region on the German side. It leads from Germany’s highest waterfalls in Triberg to the Rhine Falls near Neuhausen. Kirnbergsee is also in the Schwarzwald-Baar district, in Bräunlingen-Unterbränd; a 2.5-kilometre circular trail goes around the oval lake and across the dam.
