Villingen-Schwenningen can be explored through two distinct themes: the moorland near Schwenningen and Villingen’s cultural history. In Schwenninger Moos, the circular trail, peat extraction and the moorland habitat take centre stage; in Villingen’s town centre, the museum and Minster introduce a range of historical topics. The “Gates and Towers” tour also offers a unique perspective on the city’s history. This allows you to make nature or culture the focus of your stay.
Moorland and Circular Trail
Schwenninger Moos and the adjacent Kugelmoos are almost entirely part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. Both belong to the “Baar” FFH site 8016-341, which covers around 2,300 hectares and includes nine designated habitat types. These include moorland forests and calcareous fens. The protected-area designation and the diversity of habitat types give the moorland a special place in the natural landscape of Villingen-Schwenningen.
In the Schwenninger Moos nature reserve, a 3.5-kilometre circular trail follows the history and nature trail. Information boards explain peat extraction and the moorland habitat. The trail brings together two themes that are closely linked when exploring the area: its history of use and its importance as a moorland habitat. Themed guided tours are also available and can be booked through the environmental centre. Check current dates and availability before your trip.
Museum and Architectural History in Villingen
The Franciscan Museum is located in Villingen’s town centre and has 2,500 square metres of exhibition space. It is the region’s largest cultural history museum, with a collection spanning from prehistory to the present day. The permanent exhibition is divided into three sections: the history of the town from its beginnings to the present, the Black Forest collection, and the Celtic princely grave of Magdalenenberg. These offer different perspectives, from the town’s development and the Black Forest collection to a specific archaeological subject. Admission to the permanent exhibition is free. Check the latest information before your visit.
Another historical landmark is the Minster of Our Lady in Villingen’s historic town centre. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries in the Romanesque style, it was remodelled several times and completed in the Gothic style in 1284. Its architectural history thus combines Romanesque origins with later alterations and a Gothic finish. If you are interested in historic walls and towers, you can also join the “Gates and Towers” tour in the Villingen district. Participants gain access to parts of historic towers and walls that were previously locked and not open to the public. Check dates and ticket availability before your trip.
Getting Here and Outdoor Activities
Villingen and Schwenningen can be reached by InterCity and regional trains. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable in advance, as train connections and service patterns may change. The nature and culture attractions offer different options for planning your activities: explore the moorland via its circular trail, nature trail and possible guided tours; or focus on Villingen’s history at the museum, Minster and towers.
The Neckar rises in Möglingshöhe Park in Villingen-Schwenningen. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route follows the river and is suitable for the whole family. From here, the Neckar flows 362 kilometres to Mannheim. The river and cycle route offer a different way to experience the area than the moorland trail: here, the focus is on cycling along the river; there, on peat extraction and the moorland habitat. The two nature-based activities can therefore be chosen according to your group’s interests.
More Ideas in the Schwarzwald-Baar District
For a regional excursion beyond the local attractions, consider Kirnbergsee in the wider Schwarzwald-Baar district. A 2.5-kilometre circular trail goes around the oval lake and across the dam. Kirnbergsee is part of a Flora-Fauna-Habitat site, and rare plants grow near the shore. This regional nature attraction complements the themes of Schwenninger Moos without suggesting that Kirnbergsee is among the local attractions of Villingen-Schwenningen.
