Schwetzingen offers several distinct reasons to visit: the palace gardens, with their courtly and landscape history; a 6.3-kilometre city loop; and seasonal music and asparagus offerings. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether culture, exercise or an event in the annual calendar should be the main focus.

Palace Gardens: History and Garden Art

Schwetzingen Palace is a Baroque summer residence of the Electoral Palatinate court. The palace gardens combine this courtly heritage with landscape history: the garden designer Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell created one of Germany’s first English landscape gardens in Schwetzingen. The numerous sculptures and refined garden structures include the Garden Mosque. Alongside the history of the court, the layout of the grounds and individual buildings are therefore attractions in their own right.

The garden exhibition in the southern circular building offers an engaging look at the history and development of Schwetzingen Palace Gardens. It complements the sculptures and garden architecture with an account of how the grounds evolved. If you are especially interested in garden art, you will find here a connection to Sckell’s design and the history of the gardens.

You can explore the palace gardens independently with an app. Check before your trip whether the app is available.

The City Loop and Getting to the Starting Point

Another option to consider when planning your visit is the City Loop. It is 6.3 kilometres long, starts at Schlossplatz in Schwetzingen, and is suitable for beginners and experienced walkers. Its stated distance and starting point make it a clearly defined alternative to a visit focused on the palace gardens and garden art. Check the latest route conditions before setting out.

The City Loop at Schlossplatz can be reached on Rhein-Neckar bus routes 710, 711, 712, 713 and 717. Check the route and stop details before travelling. This lets you factor the starting point into your travel plans without linking the route to another excursion or an unspecified walking time.

Music and Asparagus Throughout the Year

The time of year can also play a role in planning your trip. The long-standing “Schwetzingen SWR Festival” opens Schwetzingen’s distinguished year-round music programme in spring. In summer, “Music in the Park” takes place in the palace gardens. The two offerings mark different seasons; individual editions and dates vary. If you want to plan your trip around a music event, check the specific dates in advance.

The Asparagus Educational Trail combines a leisurely walk with useful information about where asparagus comes from. From the end of April until St John’s Day on 24 June, local restaurants serve delicacies featuring the famous Schwetzingen asparagus. The walking trail and a restaurant visit offer different ways to explore the same subject: the focus is on information and exercise on the trail, and on seasonal cuisine at the restaurants.

The seasonal guided tour “Out and About with the Asparagus Woman” offers another perspective. In Schwetzingen’s town centre, a woman dressed in historical costume shares facts, curiosities and amusing stories about asparagus, the “royal vegetable”. While the educational trail combines a walk with information, the guided tour centres on storytelling in the town. As the tour is seasonal, check the dates that suit your trip.
