Heidelberg reveals itself from different perspectives: From the castle gardens, views stretch across the Neckar Valley, while the Old Town combines history and culture within easy walking distance. The Neckar and Heiligenberg also offer their own themes to consider when planning your trip. You can decide whether to focus mainly on viewpoints, historic sites, cultural offerings or activities by the river.
Castle Gardens, Viewpoints and Funicular
The gardens of Heidelberg Castle are open to the public free of charge. Before your visit, check whether there are any exceptional closures. From the terraces, you can look out over the castle and the Neckar Valley. In the StĂĽckgarten, the view opens onto the castle and down to the Old Town on the Neckar. The garden vistas therefore differ: one brings the castle and valley into view together, the other the castle and Old Town.
The restored wall shell of the Rondell in the Stückgarten now serves as a terrace and offers sweeping views across the Rhine Plain. The Königstuhl offers a different vista: it is Heidelberg’s highest point, with views over the castle, city and Rhine Plain. You can reach Heidelberg Castle on foot or by funicular. The funicular runs from Kornmarkt up to the castle and continues to the Königstuhl; the views grow more expansive along the way.
On the southern slope of Heiligenberg, the Philosophenweg offers views of the city, river and mountains. Hiking along this path is also one of the activities available in Heidelberg. Its perspective can be compared with the views from the castle terraces or the Königstuhl, although each viewpoint offers a different scene.
The Old Town and Heidelberg’s Cultural History
The Old Town invites you to stroll, linger and explore. Short distances bring together a mix of history and culture. The Old Bridge is a sandstone bridge with views of the castle and Old Town. For a stay focused on culture, the Old Town also offers museums and theaters; the Kurpfälzisches Museum houses Heidelberg’s art and cultural history collections.
The historic character of the castle gardens is linked to the once-famous Hortus Palatinus. On Heiligenberg, other chapters of history take center stage: the Thingstätte is a large open-air theater from the Nazi era in the summit area. The ruins of St. Michael and St. Stephen’s monasteries are also landmarks of this summit area. The castle gardens and Heiligenberg thus lead to different historical themes in Heidelberg.
Zoo, Neckarwiese and Activities by the River
Heidelberg Zoo is located on the Im Neuenheimer Feld campus and is a popular destination for a day out. There, you can discover more than 160 animal species from around the world. The Zoo Academy adds to the experience with bookable workshops, holiday activities and tours for different age groups, interests and occasions. The offerings explore the zoo’s animal and plant life. If you would like to include one in your plans, check the specific dates and booking options for your travel period.
The Neckarwiese is a good spot for picnics and walks by the river; from there, you can enjoy a view of the castle. Cycling along the Neckar and boat trips are also available activities in Heidelberg. These options offer different ways to spend your time: stay by the riverbank, explore by bike or experience the river on a boat trip. For a specific boat trip, check the current schedule.
Cultural Destinations in the Wider Rhein-Neckar-Kreis Destination
Other places in the wider Rhein-Neckar-Kreis destination also offer their own historical highlights. In Ladenburg’s historic town center, large parts of the townscape still reflect the Middle Ages and, in some places, Roman times. In Schwetzingen, the Electoral Palace with its Rococo theater and the world-famous gardens offer a different cultural experience. These regional themes complement Heidelberg’s perspectives without themselves being among the places described in Heidelberg.
