The hillside castle of Zuzenhausen was probably built above the village around 1250. One of its distinctive features is the shield wall dating from the late 14th century: it is 3.6 metres thick, 20 metres high and about 30 metres long. These measurements convey different aspects of its size—thickness, height and length. The ruin cannot be entered because of its poor condition. So do not plan an interior visit; the castle is primarily a part of the town’s history here.

A hiking trail with a focus on cultural history

The Menachem and Fred hiking trail passes through Zuzenhausen. It begins at Hoffenheim S-Bahn station and ends at Neidenstein S-Bahn station. The different start and end points are important for planning: if you hike the trail, consider your outward and return journeys from both ends rather than automatically assuming it is a loop back to the starting point. Check the current S-Bahn timetable for your journey before you travel.

Along the way, geocaching stations provide information about the lives of Fred and Menachem, Jewish history and features of the surrounding area. Three information boards also cover these topics, including the Jewish history of Hoffenheim and Neidenstein and regional features of the towns along the route. The hiking trail thus combines a route through the area with cultural and historical content, rather than simply providing a starting point and a destination.

River meadows, forests and the Kraichgau

Zuzenhausen lies on the edge of Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park and forms the northern gateway to the Kraichgau. The town has cycling and hiking trails through the river meadows of the Elsenz and Schwarzbach and through local forests. This offers different landscape settings to choose from for outdoor activities: river meadows or forest, on foot or by bike. The MĂĽhle Kolb adventure centre is also in Zuzenhausen, between the forest and the Elsenz in the Kraichgau.

These local and landscape features complement one another, although not all the routes need to be alike. If you are interested in the surrounding area, the nature park setting and the Kraichgau can serve as points of reference; the river meadows and forests mentioned above offer more tangible options for choosing what to do. The Menachem and Fred hiking trail, meanwhile, has its own focus on history and regional features.

Another leisure option in town

The Fit-Park opened in Häuselgrund in 2021. It is a freely accessible recreational facility for multiple generations. It offers a different kind of leisure activity from the trails through river meadows and forests: while hiking and cycling focus on routes through the landscape, the Fit-Park is described as a facility in town. These are different options to consider when planning your day, depending on what you would like to focus on.

Plan your arrival and stay

Zuzenhausen is connected to the S-Bahn network and therefore has public transport links. This is particularly useful when planning the Menachem and Fred hiking trail, whose endpoints are at Hoffenheim and Neidenstein S-Bahn stations. Coordinate your starting point, destination and return journey, and check the timetable for your specific travel date. The S-Bahn connection describes the town’s public transport link; you still need to check which service is right for you.

If you are planning an overnight stay in Zuzenhausen, first decide which aspects of the town matter most for your visit: the history of the hillside castle, the hiking trail with its cultural and historical focus, or trails through river meadows and forests. This lets you plan your trip around your chosen focus without including a visit to the inaccessible ruin.
