Schriesheim combines art in the old town with trails through its vineyards and traces of historic mining. If you’re looking for a hotel in Schriesheim, these themes can provide a starting point for your plans: Would you primarily like to discover exhibitions and local history, follow a particular route or plan around an event?
Art and local history in the old town
The Théo Kerg Museum presents works by Luxembourg artist Théo Kerg (1909–1993), who worked as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and glass designer. The permanent exhibition spans three floors of a restored half-timbered building in the heart of the old town. A free audio guide is available for the tour: it works in any internet browser and can be started at more than 20 stations marked with QR codes. Twice a year, the museum hosts special exhibitions featuring renowned artists from Germany and abroad. Check the current exhibition dates before your visit.
The Old Town Circular Trail also explores Schriesheim’s history. Numerous information boards highlight it along the way. Another way to combine local history with a view of Strahlenburg Castle is the “Kuhberg” themed trail: this circular route is around 3 km long and has ten information boards about the town’s history and Strahlenburg Castle.
Hiking trails and wine country
The route lengths provide a clear guide when choosing: the Kuhberg themed trail is around 3 km long, the Red Wine Hike covers 5 km, and the local S4 “Steinbruchweg” circular hiking trail is 7.4 km long. Guided wine hikes in Schriesheim are about 8 km long. The S4 follows the Steinbruchweg back to Strahlenburg Castle, then descends into town via Heidelberger Straße to the festival grounds. The guided wine hikes pass through the Kuhberg, Madonnenberg and Schlossberg vineyards.
One wine hike reaches a viewing platform below Strahlenburg Castle, offering unobstructed views across the Rhine plain. Below and beside the castle are vineyard slopes where the favorable climate can produce excellent wines. The routes therefore focus on both the paths and the wine country, though not every trail follows the same course.
Annual events and mining history
The Bergstraße Red Wine Hike takes place every year on the first Sunday in February. It starts in the heart of Schriesheim’s old town, at the historic town hall, and follows a 5 km route. At a total of eight stops, mostly in the lower vineyards, visitors can enjoy red wines, red Secco and mulled wine, as well as non-alcoholic drinks, children’s punch and coffee. The selection may vary; check the date before making plans, too. The annual Mathaisemarkt celebrates Schriesheim’s winemaking tradition and is considered the region’s largest spring and wine festival. Check the current event dates when planning your visit.
Another highlight is the 500-year-old silver and vitriol mine Grube Anna-Elisabeth in Schriesheim on the Bergstraße. A guided tour of around one hour takes you through Schriesheim’s underground world. Check the current tour dates in advance. The visitor mine is directly accessible by public transport via the “Edelstein” bus stop; check the specific connection and timetable separately.
