Sandhausen brings together two distinct themes: local history at the local history museum and inland dunes on the southern edge of town. Plants and animals can be observed along a trail on the Pferdstriebdüne. When choosing accommodation, you may therefore want to start by deciding whether cultural history or nature is your main focus.

Local History at the Local History Museum

The Sandhausen Local History Museum is housed in a former town hall built in 1742 and presents a collection of local history across seven rooms. A small archaeological section displays pottery finds from various periods. The collection also includes agricultural equipment and objects from rural household life. The museum also features a traditional living room and kitchen. It offers insights into traditional crafts, agriculture, and tobacco and hop cultivation. The topics thus range from archaeological finds to rural daily life and cultivation. If you plan to visit the museum, check its opening hours in advance.

Former Synagogue and Remembrance

The former synagogue is also part of Sandhausen’s local history. After extensive renovation, it reopened as a cultural center in 1962. Following restoration in 2015, concerts, exhibitions, and events were held there; check specific event dates in advance. A memorial stone at the former synagogue commemorates Jewish residents who lost their lives during the Nazi era. The site thus combines a cultural use with a dedicated place of remembrance.

Dune Landscape and Nature Watching

The Sandhausen dunes lie west and south of the town; just under 74 hectares are protected as a nature reserve. The Pferdstriebdüne, on the southern edge of town, is an elongated inland dune running north to south. In its southern part, a path leads to the crest, which is about eight meters high. From there, you can observe the dune’s plants and animals. Check local access conditions before your visit. The Brühlwegdüne is the southern continuation of the Pferdstriebdüne and was designated a nature reserve in 2020.

Two excursions to the sand biotope near Sandhausen take place each year. Ask the organizer for current dates.
