The castle park and historic sites give Neckarbischofsheim two distinct focal points for a stay. The park surrounds the Old Castle, a picturesque castle pond, and a well-preserved Renaissance gate. Three circular hiking trails of varying lengths also start and end here. When planning, you can therefore consider both the town’s history and routes that suit you.

Castle Park and Countryside

Neckarbischofsheim lies among gentle hills on the boundary between the Kraichgau and the Kleiner Odenwald. The town includes the districts of Helmhof and Untergimpern. The castle park covers about 2.6 hectares. Its arboretum contains, among other trees, approximately two that are more than 250 years old. Particularly impressive specimens are marked with information boards.

The park and arboretum offer a distinctive way to explore local history: alongside the castle, pond, and Renaissance gate, the old trees are also a highlight. The information boards help you identify individual remarkable specimens in the arboretum. If you prefer to combine your stay with some exercise, the castle park is also the starting and finishing point for several circular hiking trails.

Towers, Museums, and Historic Sites

The Pentagonal Tower is a 24-meter-high remnant of the town’s fortifications and a landmark of Neckarbischofsheim. Since 1965, the tower, dating from 1448, has housed an exhibition on local history. Its collection includes boundary stones, fossils, and small Roman finds, as well as the furnishings of a farmhouse parlor, objects from crafts and agriculture, archival materials on the town’s history, association flags, and uniforms.

The local history museum displays objects and paintings about the history of the town and the Lords of Helmstatt, who ruled here from the 13th through the 19th century. The Adolf Schmitthenner Room features works by the poets Karl Mayer and Adolf Schmitthenner, both born in Neckarbischofsheim, as well as paintings by landscape artist Louis Mayer. These collections complement the historic walking tour, which covers 25 monuments in the old town. Information boards and QR codes provide additional information and video clips.

Other sites reveal different aspects of the town’s history. The tower of the Protestant town church of St. Salvator was built in 1543. The Schmitthenner House is the birthplace of poet and theologian Adolf Schmitthenner. Alexanderburg was built in the first half of the 16th century; it is the birthplace of poet Karl Mayer and landscape artist Louis Mayer. Remains of the walls of the Jewish house of worship, built in 1848, can be seen at Synagogue Square. A memorial stone commemorates its destruction during the November Pogrom of 1938.

The town pharmacy is also part of the historic townscape: the building was constructed in 1824 in the Neoclassical Weinbrenner style, and began operating as a pharmacy in 1881. Together with the towers, houses, and memorial sites, it offers a glimpse into the town’s history through its various buildings and collections.

Circular Hikes and Seasonal Activities

The three circular hiking trails of the Odenwald Club Neckarbischofsheim start and end in the castle park. The “Altenberg” route follows NB 4 and is 5.6 kilometers long. “Autenberg” follows NB 1 for 7.3 kilometers. At 18.0 kilometers, the “Helmhöfer Forsthaus” circular hike on NB 3 is the longest of the three. The distances make the differences between the routes clear without requiring a specific walking time.

Beyond these routes, the Neckarbischofsheim area offers varied walks and longer hikes that can also take in neighboring communities. Another seasonal option is the field railway attraction run by the field railway enthusiasts on the outskirts of town toward Helmhof. It runs on days scheduled during the summer months and on selected dates; check the specific operating dates before visiting. The leisure facilities also include an outdoor swimming pool open during the summer months. As seasonal availability may change, we recommend checking current availability before your visit.

When planning your trip, you can treat the historic sites and nature activities as separate highlights. The walking tour focuses on monuments and local history, while the hiking routes are clearly distinguished by their stated lengths. The castle park, arboretum, and seasonal activities add to the options, without requiring you to follow a set day plan.
