Ottersweier brings together the trails of the WaldErlebnisStation and the long history of the Maria Linden pilgrimage church. This gives you two different focal points for a stay: trails with a variety of experiences and a place with centuries of pilgrimage tradition. The specific trail distances and walking times can help you choose the nature part of your itinerary according to the time you have available.

WaldErlebnisStation: Three Trails for Different Time Budgets

The WaldErlebnisStation in Ottersweier offers a balance trail about 70 metres long, with nine elements. The puzzle trail is around two kilometres long and takes approximately one and a half hours in regular footwear. The wildlife trail is a circular route of around 500 metres, passing eleven hidden animals; in regular footwear, it takes approximately half an hour.

The walking times for the two trails can be compared directly: the puzzle trail takes about an hour longer than the half-hour wildlife trail loop. At around 70 metres, the balance trail is the shortest of the three. The activities also differ: one trail is about balancing, another about solving puzzles, and another about finding hidden animals. This lets you compare the trails by time and type of experience, while keeping in mind that the approximate walking times are not fixed durations.

Maria Linden: Pilgrimage and Architectural History

The Maria Linden pilgrimage church adds a historical focal point to your stay. Believers have been making pilgrimages there since the late 15th century. In 1484, it was first mentioned in historical records in connection with the construction of a church that was Gothic at the time. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1786, and this appearance has been preserved to this day.

The dates tell the story of two distinct stages in the building’s history: its first historical mention during the church’s construction and its later Baroque redesign. Together with the pilgrimage tradition that dates back to the late 15th century, this offers a different perspective on Ottersweier alongside the WaldErlebnisStation’s activities. Those interested in architecture can distinguish in particular between the Gothic classification of the church as it was then and the Baroque appearance that has been preserved to this day.

More highlights in the wider destination of Rastatt

The wider destination of Rastatt offers further cultural and historical themes. The Rastatt City Museum is housed in a Baroque town palace opposite the residential palace. Its permanent exhibitions cover Rastatt’s history over the past 300 years, as well as prehistory and early history. Rastatt Palace was modelled on Versailles and was the first Baroque residence built on German soil. Favorite Palace is the oldest and only German porcelain palace preserved in its original form. In this way, urban history, residential architecture and porcelain culture stand alongside one another as clearly distinct focal points.

The Memorial Site for the Freedom Movements in German History offers a different perspective. It presents milestones in the development of freedom and democratic traditions from the early modern period to the present day. Exhibits, models, pictures, caricatures and contemporary texts illustrate the revolutionary struggle of men and women across Germany in 1848/49, which ended with the fall of Rastatt Fortress.

Sports activities in the Rastatt area

The Mehliskopf leisure and sports centre offers a bobsleigh run with a 1,000-metre descent, four steep forest bends, seven steep meadow bends and eight water crossings. The Murgtal/BĂĽhlertal winter sports area in the district of Rastatt offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing and snowboarding. Facilities also include ten ski lifts and a 110-kilometre network of cross-country ski trails. This selection highlights different activities: a bobsleigh run, as well as winter sports with trails and other options.
