Lautenbach combines views over the lower Murg Valley with ancient granite boulders, a small outdoor pool and a church with a turbulent past. For planning your trip, hiking, leisure and village history offer different focal points: local highlights range from the circular walk to Lautenfelsen to the village’s own public holiday on the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Lautenfelsen: Rock Formations and Views

The so-called “woolsack-weathered” granite boulders at Lautenfelsen are around 300 million years old. The area around Lautenfelsen is designated as a nature reserve. The climb to Lautenfelsen offers unobstructed views over Lautenbach and the lower Murg Valley. This makes the site a place where geological features, protected landscape and scenic views come together.

Circular Walk and Stage Compared by Length

A circular walk of around 3.2 km leads to Lautenfelsen, climbs approximately 200 metres and offers sweeping views of the surrounding area from an elevation of 610 m above sea level. The Gernsbach–Lautenbach stage is around 6.7 km long. In terms of distance, the circular walk is the shorter option; its elevation gain is also provided. Kilometres and metres of elevation gain complement each other as planning measures: they show different aspects of the hike described.

Outdoor Pool with Views of Lautenfelsen

The small outdoor pool offers views of Lautenfelsen. Facilities include sunbathing lawns and seating, a shaded sandpit and play equipment. There is also a table tennis table, table football and a playing field, as well as an adjoining kiosk. Alongside the rock walk, this offers a different leisure option in the village: facilities range from sunbathing areas to play and sports activities. When planning your trip, you can consider these offerings as attractions in their own right, alongside the hiking trails.

Public Holiday and Village History

Lautenbach observes its own public holiday each year on 2 July for the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary; it dates back to a vow. In connection with the feast, a procession leads from the church through the entire village and up to Illert Chapel.

The present-day old church in the upper village was consecrated on 14 April 1818. Its predecessor chapel was destroyed in 1815 in a devastating fire that reduced most of the village to rubble and ashes. The dates establish a clear sequence: the chapel’s destruction was followed by the consecration of the present-day old church.

Gernsbach as a Wider Travel Destination

Elsewhere in the wider travel destination of Gernsbach, other historic sites have their own distinct character. The Storchenturm has been part of the townscape there for more than 500 years; following a renovation, a permanent exhibition was established in 2014. The Old Town Hall is considered one of the most beautiful and art-historically significant residential buildings of its time in southern Germany. Since April 2012, its upper floors have housed the Museum of the Harmonie, run by the Jan Brauers Foundation.

The Katz’sche Garden is also one of Gernsbach’s cultural attractions: this historic park lies on the banks of the Murg and contains numerous sculptures and art objects from past centuries. The grounds also feature a Neoclassical garden pavilion dating from 1846. Gernsbach therefore offers its own cultural and historical context, while Lautenbach has its own highlights in Lautenfelsen, the outdoor pool and the village’s history.
