Hügelsheim combines a strong asparagus tradition with local history and seasonal leisure activities. The best focus for a stay therefore also depends on the time of year: culinary recommendations, ice sports and summer swimming follow different calendars.

Asparagus and local produce

Hügelsheim lies on the Baden Asparagus Route and is considered a regional asparagus village. Another local product is Jerusalem artichoke: the tuber is grown here and made into schnapps, which is sold in several varieties. Jerusalem artichoke also appears on menus at local restaurants, for example as a soup; offerings may vary by restaurant and season.

During the asparagus harvest, from late April to mid-June, the municipality recommends traditional asparagus dishes. Harvest times may vary. This gives visitors two distinct culinary options: asparagus during the harvest season and Jerusalem artichoke as a local product found in both drinks and dishes.

Traces of local history

The Roman road preserves the memory of Hügelsheim’s Roman past; its route can still be traced using aerial photographs. The municipality had the present-day church built in 1842. Rights to pan for gold in the Hügelsheim Rhine meadows are recorded from 1345 onward. Another historical point of interest: Hügelsheim had permission to send a toll-free market boat to Strasbourg every Thursday. These clues lead from a Roman trace through the municipality’s history to former trading rights.

Ice sports, lake and golf

Ice hockey games featuring teams from the Hügelsheim Ice Sports Club are regularly held at the Baden-Airpark Ice Arena. There are also weekly public skating sessions. The games and skating schedule may vary seasonally. Skates can be rented at the ice arena; availability may depend on seasonal operations.

Erländersee is a summer swimming destination in Hügelsheim. It is open for seasonal use from April to mid-September and attracts swimmers from the surrounding area. The water quality is considered good; check current official notices and conditions before swimming. The Baden-Airpark area also has an 18-hole golf course, operated by the Baden-Hills Golf and Curling Club. Contact the club for current visitor information.

Staying and getting around

A cycle path runs between Iffezheim and Hügelsheim. A direct bus service, Baden-Baden line (BBL) 205, runs from Hügelsheim to central Baden-Baden; check the current timetable before travelling. A local information publication covers municipal updates, local events and church news.

If you are considering Hügelsheim as a place to stay, the time of year is a useful starting point: asparagus dishes are recommended from late April to mid-June, Erländersee is a summer destination, and the ice arena’s program may change seasonally. This lets you match your interests with the different seasonal offerings before planning specific activities.

A further option in the wider destination of Rastatt

As a separate cultural attraction in the wider destination of Rastatt, consider Rastatt City Museum: it is housed in a Baroque town palace opposite the residential palace. The permanent exhibitions cover Rastatt’s history over the past 300 years as well as prehistory and early history. Rastatt Palace was the first Baroque residence built on German soil and was designed on the model of Versailles.
