Abtsgmünd offers a range of options for planning your trip: the Kochertalblick Route is estimated to take around two and a half hours to walk, while the 72-kilometre Bühlertal Hiking Trail can be completed in six daily stages. There are also cycling routes, a Baroque garden and distinctive architectural history. If you are looking for accommodation, you can plan your stay around whether hiking, cycling or culture is your main focus.

Hiking and cycling on a range of routes

The Kochertalblick Hiking Route starts at the Abtsgmünd bus station, is 9 kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours. It is intended for hikers wearing sturdy footwear. The route ends at the Laubbach Reservoir. There is a barbecue and camping area there, and refreshments are available at the hiking hut. Use of these facilities may depend on local operating conditions.

The Green Path offers a choice of different tours: six loops for hikers and cyclists range from 16 to 26 kilometres. Around 50 information boards along the path point out sights and provide information about the route. This combines a choice of route lengths with information about the sights along the Green Path.

The 72-kilometre Bühlertal Hiking Trail can be walked in six daily stages, from the source of the Bühler to its confluence with the Kocher. The 46.2-kilometre BühlerTour, by contrast, is a cycling route: it follows the Bühlertal from its confluence with the Kocher back to the source near Pommertsweiler. Both routes follow the Bühler, but differ in length, mode of travel and direction. They therefore offer different options for a multi-day hike or a cycling tour.

The Castles Tour can be started at the car park in Abtsgmünd and is intended for experienced cyclists. It covers 42 kilometres and 425 metres of elevation gain; check local conditions before setting out. If you would rather plan a themed walk, you can choose the “Churches and Castles” circular route: it runs mostly along paved paths and passes through Leinroden, Neubronn, Hohenstadt, Wöllstein and Abtsgmünd.

Garden and architectural history

The Hohenstadt Hedge Garden is considered one of the oldest Baroque gardens in Europe. Visitors can stroll among beech hedges, centuries-old trees and leafy arcades. The garden thus combines its Baroque character with a walking route among hedges, trees and foliage.

The Way of St James Chapel in Wöllstein is a protected cultural monument of particular significance and a stop on the Way of St James pilgrimage route. Untergröningen Castle is a Renaissance castle: it was built in 1563 and remodelled in the 18th century. The two places represent different historical connections: the pilgrimage tradition and castle architecture transformed over several centuries.

Plan your stay

When looking for accommodation in Abtsgmünd, it is worth first deciding what kind of daily schedule you want. The Kochertalblick Route has a specific walking time, and the Bühlertal Hiking Trail is divided into six daily stages; for cyclists, several route lengths are given, as well as elevation gain for the Castles Tour. The hedge garden, chapel and castle offer a different focus from the routes. You can plan your accommodation search around whether outdoor activity, a multi-day hike, or architectural and garden history will shape your stay.
