Neresheim has a distinctive cultural focus in its abbey church: it is a cultural heritage site of European standing and an outstanding attraction. The monastery museum complements the abbey with insights into its architectural history and its historical significance for natural science, education and art. During a stay, you can choose between the church building, the museum exhibits and the walking routes around the monastery.

Abbey Church and Monastery Museum

The museum spans three floors in the convent building and the prelature. Its collection includes most of the teaching materials from the former monastery grammar school, which have been preserved. Within the history of the monastery, they offer a distinct perspective on natural science and education; the other exhibition themes also cover art and architectural history.

The museum tour ends with a visit to the unique banqueting hall, whose stucco paintings were created by Dominikus Zimmermann. The museum rooms can only be visited with a knowledgeable guide. Guided tours for individuals and groups are available exclusively by prior arrangement with the monastery administration. Be sure to plan for this before your visit.

Way of St. James and Walking Routes

A Way of St. James starting in Neresheim leads via Tübingen onward to France. The scallop shell serves as the trail marker. Shell signs can be found, for example, in the car park in front of the monastery, at the start of Klosterallee near the “Alte Bahnhof” (Old Station), in the “Zwing” nature reserve, and to the west, on the Tourist Information building at Hauptstraße 21. These various locations provide specific points of reference around town without requiring a single designated starting point.

The Baroque Trail is a walking route around the abbey. The trail to the Härtsfeld Railway Museum takes a different route: it leads from Neresheim station to Dischingen station, is not a circular route and is also part of the cycle path. The routes therefore differ in specific ways: the Baroque Trail focuses on the area around the abbey, while the other trail connects two stations as its start and end points. The Way of St. James, in turn, continues beyond Neresheim.

Traces of the Härtsfeld Railway

Railway history is also part of the townscape. The operating hub of the historic Härtsfeld Railway, the “Centralstation,” was located in Neresheim, right at the foot of Ulrichsberg. The Härtsfeld Railway Museum opened at Neresheim station. Museum railway operations on the Neresheim–Sägmühle line began in October 2001; there, visitors can discover what it was like in the past. The trail to the Härtsfeld Railway Museum and these historic railway connections offer different points of interest: one links two stations, while the other explores the history of railway operations.

Another destination nearby

Near the destination, at the old lime works near Neresheim in the Egau Valley, there is a bee education trail, a wild bee observation station and a bee garden. This offers a nature-focused theme alongside the history of the monastery and the walking routes. The attractions are in different locations; the bee education trail is at the old lime works in the Egau Valley, not within the monastery complex.

Planning Your Stay

If you are planning an overnight stay in Neresheim, you can start by deciding what interests you most: the abbey church and museum, a walk around the abbey, the Way of St. James or the history of the Härtsfeld Railway each raise different questions for your stay. Prior registration with the monastery administration is important for the museum tour. For the walking routes, their specific paths can help you choose: the Baroque Trail runs around the abbey, the trail to the museum railway is a route between two stations, and the Way of St. James leads via Tübingen onward to France.
