You can explore Schwäbisch Gmünd through its architectural and cultural history: the city’s sights span more than eight centuries. The Historic City Tour is a good place to start, bringing together notable sites in a single route. There are also walking destinations with a different focus and a museum dedicated to industrial, economic, and cultural history.

Architecture and City History

The Historic City Tour leads from the former hospital building past the Baroque market square and Romanesque St. John’s Church to the Heilig-Kreuz Minster. Along the way, you will encounter a range of architectural periods. The minster is considered the oldest hall church in southern Germany. The sequence of stops provides a clear thread if you want to get to know Schwäbisch Gmünd primarily through its buildings.

The museum in the Ott-Pauser Factory offers a different perspective. It is dedicated to the industrial, economic, and cultural history of Schwäbisch Gmünd and Baden-Württemberg. In this way, architectural history complements economic and cultural topics: you can focus on individual buildings or explore history in a broader context.

Walks with Different Focuses

The Blooming City Tour starts at the train station and leads through Remspark and along the Grabenallee beside the Josefsbach to Zeiselberg, continuing into the heart of Schwäbisch Gmünd. This offers another route through the city, with a layout that differs from the sequence of stops on the Historic City Tour. Signage and route details may change; check the current signs along the way.

The Johannisturm tower is open to visitors and offers a special view. As access rules may vary, check the current conditions before your visit. For a walk on hot days, the Taubental valley near Schwäbisch Gmünd is a good choice: it is a cool, quiet place to walk. This gives you the choice between a city tour with named stops and a more peaceful walking destination, depending on what you feel like doing that day.

Things to Do with Children

If you are traveling with children, the Maatzamba puppet theater could be one of your activities. It offers entertaining and educational shows for children, as well as live performances. Programs and availability may change, so check the current listings in advance. This lets you plan for the visit based on the actual program.

A Limes Highlight in the Ostalbkreis

In the wider Ostalbkreis travel region, Rainau offers a particular focus on the history of the Limes. The Upper German-Raetian Limes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, extends for around six kilometers within the municipality of Rainau, in the districts of Buch, Schwabsberg, and Dalkingen. The Limes Park Rainau preserves its most beautiful sections and most significant individual monuments in a unique concentration. The Limestor Dalkingen is a one-of-a-kind structure along the entire Limes route between the Rhine and the Danube. From a reconstructed watchtower, you can enjoy panoramic views across the Ostalb region.

The signposted circular Limes hiking trail near Rainau is about eleven kilometers long and takes approximately two and a half hours on foot. It runs from the Limes wall and Limes tower between Buch and Schwabsberg through the “Mahdholz” forest along the Limes to the southern edge of Schwabsberg. Its length and approximate walking time give you a concrete idea of the scope of this hike. It complements the architectural and cultural history of Schwäbisch Gmünd with a distinct Limes theme in the Ostalbkreis.
