Lauchheim offers a remarkable variety of landscapes within a small area: these include the young Jagst Valley, the Ellwangen Virngrund, the heathland hills on the edge of the Ries, the densely forested Alb escarpment and the rugged, stony Härtsfeld. The elevation ranges from 480 to 730 metres; well-maintained hiking and cycling trails add to the options for spending time outdoors. Churches, chapels, a museum and Kapfenburg Castle provide further points of interest. You can shape your trip around nature trails, architectural heritage and history.
Stettberg nature and fitness trail
The Stettberg nature and fitness trail is designed to introduce visitors to the local flora and fauna. It begins at the fire pond by the municipal depot and runs along LindenstraĂźe and FuchsmĂĽhlweg. After passing under the railway, it continues across Wiedenfeld to FuchsmĂĽhle and on to the shooting club. These landmarks give you a clear idea of the route.
Along the trail are a meadow with a barbecue area, the “Take a Breath” spot and a small exercise equipment circuit. Discovering nature and getting active are both part of this trail. Together with the hiking and cycling trails, it gives you different ways to plan time outdoors in Lauchheim, though the nature trail should not be mistaken for a circular route.
Churches, chapels and local history
Today’s parish church of St Peter and Paul was built in 1869 and 1870. The renovated church is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style and features exceptional interior furnishings, including works of art. St Barbara’s Chapel is the oldest surviving building of the parish; it was built around 1400 in the Gothic style. The cemetery chapel adds another note of art-historical interest with its elaborately designed Baroque-era altar.
Lauchheim’s town centre also tells of the town’s former role: several buildings still bear witness to the fact that it was once the administrative centre of the Kapfenburg Teutonic Order commandery. The church, chapels and surviving landmarks in the centre offer different perspectives on local architectural and administrative history.
Museum in the Gate Tower
The Museum in the Gate Tower covers geology, prehistory and the Roman period, including two forts. Its exhibits reflect Lauchheim’s distinctive development as the area’s place of origin and as the centre of the Kapfenburg Teutonic Order commandery. The museum complements the buildings in the town centre with an insight into the town’s development and early history.
Guided tours can be arranged outside opening hours by prior agreement, including in combination with a town tour. If you would like to plan a tour, arrange the date in advance.
Kapfenburg Castle and the Ukulele Trail
Since 1999, Kapfenburg Castle has been home to the International Music School Academy Cultural Centre at Kapfenburg Castle. Another castle-related attraction is the interactive Ukulele Trail. Information published by the operator in 2024 describes it as a circular route around the castle that introduces children and families to its history in a playful way. Details about the stops may change.
Plan your stay
When looking for accommodation, you can start by deciding what matters most for your trip: are the hiking and cycling trails the main attraction, or are you particularly interested in the churches, chapels and museum? Lauchheim’s diverse attractions give you a concrete basis for planning your days and tailoring your search for hotels in Lauchheim to your interests.
