At 626 metres, the Katzenbuckel in Waldbrunn is the highest mountain in the Odenwald. From its 20-metre observation tower, panoramic views extend across the Odenwald; access is free of charge. The “Path of Crystals” geological nature trail explains how the Katzenbuckel was formed from an extinct volcano. Together, these attractions offer two perspectives on the same mountain: views across the landscape and a geological explanation of its formation.
Trails and specific routes
A circular accessible trail of around 3.8 kilometres in Elztal runs through the Trienzbach valley and past a Kneipp facility. Opened on 18 March 2026, the trail is suitable for wheelchair users, people with walkers and families with pushchairs. The “Stalactite Caves Trail” starts at the Klinge youth village near Seckach and leads for 6.9 kilometres to the Eberstadt stalactite cave. The two trails differ both in length and in format: one is a circular route through a valley, with a Kneipp facility, while the other is a hiking trail with a named destination. So when comparing them, it is not just the distance that matters, but also whether a circular route or a trail to the stalactite cave better suits your outing.
Castle, museum and travel
Hornberg Castle in Neckarzimmern consists of the lower castle, upper castle and outer bailey. Its architecture is thus divided into three clearly named areas—a concrete introduction to the layout of a castle. The Odenwald Open-Air Museum in Walldürn offers a different historical focus: traditional craft techniques and farming methods are regularly demonstrated there. The distinction is clear: the castle is about the named parts of a complex, while the museum focuses on demonstrated working practices.
