Half-timbered houses, a town museum spread across five buildings and hiking trails of varying lengths give Mosbach several ways to explore. The historic old town is characterized by its magnificent half-timbered houses, and the municipal park adjoins it directly. You can therefore choose from sights within the town as well as trails with different starting points and levels of difficulty.

Half-timbered Houses and Local History

The Gutleutanlage in eastern Mosbach consists of the Gutleuthaus, the Elendhaus and the Gutleut Chapel. Thanks to its cohesive layout and well-preserved original character, it is one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Baden-Württemberg. Haus Kickelhain offers a different perspective: with a floor area of 26 square meters, it is among the smallest detached half-timbered houses in Germany. Typical rural furniture gives visitors a glimpse of Odenwald domestic culture in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Mosbach Town Museum presents insights into local and regional history across five buildings around the Hospitalhof. Its themes include faience and majolica, the history of the Jewish community in Mosbach, crafts and guilds, and the folklore of displaced persons. Printing history, known as the “Black Art,” is also covered. The different topics make the museum a way to explore local history from several perspectives.

Groups can also take part in activities offered by Druckwerkstatt Mosbach e.V. at the town museum. Under the motto “Brightly Colored and Handmade,” the creative printing activities are designed for groups of four to twelve people. During these several-hour, hands-on educational printing sessions, children can print their own colorful works of art. Schools, kindergartens and birthday groups make particular use of these activities; prior arrangements may be required.

Hiking from Mosbach: Compare the Routes

The Jupiter Trail starts in the museum courtyard in Mosbach’s historic old town and is 7.3 kilometers long; it is rated moderate. Along the route in the municipal forest are a faithful stone replica of the Leugenstein and the Jupiter bench. Both sights are located on easily accessible forest roads. This trail therefore links a starting point in the old town with named stops in the municipal forest.

The M2 Hornberg Hiking Trail starts at Franz-Roser-Platz and runs for about seven kilometers to Hornberg Castle. The castle can be visited. For a longer hike, the M6 Hamberg–Dreibrunnenwiese circular trail covers about 14 kilometers: it starts at Bleiche, takes 3.5 to 4 hours and is suitable for experienced hikers. The starting point, approximate length and stated duration can help you choose a route to match the time available and your hiking experience.

The Elzuferweg also starts at Bleiche. It runs about nine kilometers to the center of Neckarzimmern and is also designated as a cycling and hiking trail. Around Mosbach, approximately 120 kilometers of marked trails lead through the natural landscape of the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park. The trails vary in their starting points, lengths and stated difficulty levels; check the current conditions along the route before setting out.

The Municipal Park and Getting Your Bearings

The 19-hectare municipal park borders the old town directly. A continuous network of paths runs through the park, where visitors can experience the renaturalized Elz stream. The park is another area to include in your Mosbach plans, alongside the sights and longer hiking trails.

For travel to the area, Mosbach/Baden station has an S-Bahn connection. It is just a short walk from the town center and directly connected to the pedestrian zone in the historic old town. The Mosbach Tourist Information Office can help you plan your stay and provides information about sights, guided town tours and excursions, leisure activities, day-trip destinations, accommodation and dining. Town maps are available there online or as printed fold-out maps.
