Neuburg Castle stands above Obrigheim on a steep rock overlooking the Neckar. The historic castle dates back to the 14th century and provides a striking starting point for a stay focused on local history. This medieval heritage is complemented by trails devoted to industrial history and the history of the three districts. In Obrigheim, different historical themes sit side by side, rather than a visit being limited to a single attraction.

Castle History and Remembrance

The Goldfish Historical Trail covers the relocation of a Daimler-Benz aircraft engine factory to Obrigheim’s gypsum mine in 1944. Concentration camp prisoners were used for construction work; free and foreign workers were employed in engine production. The trail thus addresses both the relocation of production and the different tasks performed by the groups involved.

The Goldfish Trail is freely accessible and can be visited at any time. Nevertheless, before visiting, it is advisable to check for possible temporary restrictions due to maintenance or safety concerns. The circular route is about 2.5 kilometres long.

History Trails and Mining

The local history association has created a history trail in each of the three districts. Numbered information boards and arrows pointing to the next board make it easier for visitors unfamiliar with the area to find their way. Obrigheim also has a well-developed network of cycling and hiking trails. Individual routes may change, so it is worth checking your planned route before setting out.

The Gypsum Trail offers insights into Germany’s largest and oldest underground gypsum mine. Gypsum has been mined in Obrigheim since 1847. Visits to the gypsum mine are possible by registering online; check whether registration is available before your trip. The Gypsum Trail, the local history museum and the Goldfish Trail are designated geopoints in Obrigheim.

The themes span very different periods: Neuburg Castle dates back to the 14th century, gypsum mining goes back to 1847, and the Goldfish Trail covers the factory’s relocation in 1944. This contrast helps you choose a focus—from the medieval castle to industrial history and remembrance of the wartime period.
