Wittighausen combines signposted circular hiking and cycling routes with churches and chapels as local attractions. Two hikes are easy to compare when planning your trip: the Northern Chapel Circular Trail is longer but rated easy; the shorter Wayside Shrine Circular Trail has some climbs and is rated easy to moderate. For cycling, the town lies on the Main-Tauber Cycle Route. This lets you plan your stay around the time you have and the activities you prefer, rather than trying to fit hiking, cycling and culture into a single day.

Hiking between Circular Trails and Woodlands

There are three signposted circular hiking trails in Wittighausen. They were marked in spring 2014, and in the districts concerned, you can join either trail in either direction. Check the route details locally before setting out. Signposts and leaflets are available at six locations in Wittighausen’s districts; check in advance whether they are still available. All four districts have extensive woodland. These areas can be reached via well-maintained field paths that invite you to explore on foot. Both the signposted loops and the field paths offer orientation for a day of hiking.

The Northern Chapel Circular Trail is about 11 kilometres long and takes around three hours. It is rated easy, has few climbs and runs mostly on asphalt. The Wayside Shrine Circular Trail is shorter, at around 7.6 kilometres and about two hours; it is rated easy to moderate and has some climbs. So the trails differ not only in the time required, but also in their ratings and elevation profiles. Trail conditions can change; check local information before your hike.

Cycling along the Wittig and GrĂĽnbach

Wittighausen lies roughly halfway along the Main-Tauber Cycle Route, which connects the Liebliche Taubertal region with the cycle routes of the Main Valley. The Wittig Valley section is about 18 kilometres long and runs mostly along the Wittig and GrĂĽnbach streams. It is paved throughout and relatively flat. From Kirchheim, you can continue on to WĂĽrzburg. There is also a paved route connecting Wittighausen with Lauda in the Tauber Valley and WĂĽrzburg in the Main Valley. The valley section has an approximate distance and follows two streams; the onward connection is defined mainly by the destinations mentioned. Before setting out, check the current route and surface conditions, as these can change.

Churches and Chapels in Poppenhausen

Churches and chapels are among Wittighausen’s attractions. The Hofkapelle and St. Martin’s Church in Poppenhausen each house a replica, created by Heinz Schiestl, of an earlier Pietà by Tilman Riemenschneider. The replicas are part of the local historic furnishings. For visitors interested in culture, this is a specific point of interest alongside the hiking and cycling routes: two named religious sites are connected with a work by Riemenschneider and its later reproduction.

More to Explore in the Main-Tauber District

The wider Main-Tauber District destination offers another area of interest: wine and culture. Wine tastings can be booked at the Taubertal Wine Library in Bronnbach Monastery. More than 20 winegrowers and wineries showcase selected wines from Baden, WĂĽrttemberg and Franconia there. Bronnbach Monastery is a former Cistercian monastery. The Bronnbach Cultural Tours programme includes concerts, readings, exhibitions, wine and culinary events, and lectures. These offerings are part of the wider Main-Tauber District destination and broaden the focus beyond Wittighausen. Wine tastings and cultural events are different reasons to plan a trip; before travelling, check the relevant dates and the availability of the bookable wine tasting.
