Bad Mergentheim offers several distinct ways to plan your trip: an expansive spa park, trails connected with the Way of St. James and Eduard Mörike, and cultural history at the Teutonic Order Museum. You can choose your focus according to your interests—spending time outdoors, hiking, cycling or visiting a museum.
The spa park as a destination in its own right
Bad Mergentheim Spa Park covers more than 134,000 square metres. Its described landscaping includes a vibrant abundance of flowers, majestic trees and well-maintained green spaces. The park is open at all times and admission is free. This means you can plan a visit without having to factor in an admission fee. Before your visit, check whether any temporary changes apply on site. Its size and varied green spaces make it different from the themed trails and the museum: the spa park offers room to spend time outdoors, while the other destinations are each linked to a route or a specific cultural theme.
Hiking trails and a cycling route with different themes
Hiking enthusiasts have two different options. The Main-Tauber Valley Way of St. James runs through the castle park directly to Mergentheim Residenzschloss. There is also a hiking trail in Bad Mergentheim following in Eduard Mörike’s footsteps. One trail connects the castle park and the Residenzschloss; the other focuses on the poet. This lets you choose between a route linked to the castle and one with a literary focus.
Cycling is also linked to a landmark in Bad Mergentheim: the residence of the Teutonic Order is a major point of interest along the “Lovely Tauber Valley – The Classic” tour. Hiking and cycling therefore explore different themes. When planning your route, it is advisable to check the latest route information before setting out.
Teutonic Order Museum and local history
The Teutonic Order Museum in the Residenzschloss brings together a range of subjects in one collection. The Mörike Cabinet commemorates Eduard Mörike’s time in the town from 1844 to 1851. A collection of antiquities was donated in 1864 by Baron Carl Joseph von Adelsheim. A dedicated section features 40 doll kitchens, doll rooms, dollhouses and toy shops from the 19th and 20th centuries; they tell the story of life in times gone by. From 1525 to 1809, the castle was the residence of the Grand and German Masters of the Teutonic Order. Literary history, collections and the castle’s historic role each give a museum visit its own focus.
Getting there by train
Bad Mergentheim station is operated by DB Regio-Netze, also known as Westfrankenbahn (WFB). If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable before setting off. Information about the station and its operator is a useful point of reference; specific connections should be included in your individual travel plans.
More places to explore in the Main-Tauber district
The wider travel destination of the Main-Tauber district also includes Bronnbach Monastery, a former Cistercian monastery. Wine tastings can be booked at the Taubertal Wine Shop in the monastery. There, more than 20 vintners and wineries present selected wines from Baden, Württemberg and Franconia. Bronnbach’s cultural events include concerts, readings, exhibitions, wine and food events, and talks. These offerings are part of the Main-Tauber district and should be seen as a separate regional theme, distinct from the attractions of Bad Mergentheim.
