At 788.2 metres, Amalienhöhe is Heiligenberg’s highest point. From here, the panoramic views stretch far across the landscape; the hill is also a popular destination for walks. Visitors choosing to stay in the area will find a range of highlights: circular walks through the uplands, routes to religious buildings and viewpoints, and a distinctive castle history.
Panoramic trails and routes to viewpoints
The two panoramic trails are circular routes through Heiligenberg’s uplands and offer appealing views. Panorama Trail I is 13.6 kilometres long, while Panorama Trail II is 6.4 kilometres. Their stated lengths are their main difference; both are circular routes. The distances can help you choose a trail, without indicating a walking time or level of difficulty. Amalienhöhe complements these longer routes as a place to stroll and enjoy panoramic views.
The Monastery Trails offer a different way to combine scenery and history. They lead to various religious buildings and viewpoints within the municipality. If you would like to include buildings as well as views along the way, they offer a distinct focus alongside the panoramic trails. Freundschaftshöhle lies in the immediate surroundings of Heiligenberg: in fine weather, a hike there is a special experience, with views of the castle and the valley along the way.
Heiligenberg Castle and its history
Between 1560 and 1575, Heiligenberg Castle was transformed from a late medieval fortress into a Renaissance castle. The castle chapel is an important monument to the German Renaissance and the history of the House of Fürstenberg. It has served as the family burial place since 1586. These dates put the building’s history in context and show how closely architecture and family history come together at the castle.
The Knights’ Hall is also associated with a special view: from here, the panorama extends across Lake Constance to the Alpine chain. The castle, chapel and hall each offer a different focus: the fortress’s transformation, the Renaissance and Fürstenberg history on the one hand, and views of the lake and Alps on the other.
More things to do throughout the year
The “Musik & Kultur Heiligenberg” association offers a varied programme of music and films in a range of styles. A programme for 2026 is available; individual performances may change. If you are planning to attend an event, check the relevant dates in advance.
The landscape offers other highlights, too: Heiligenberg’s high-altitude outdoor swimming pool is in the Linzgau region at 730 metres and offers views as far as the Alps. When there is enough snow, Heiligenberg offers winter sports, with a downhill slope and ski lift, as well as more than 20 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails. Snow conditions are essential, so check the latest conditions before making plans.
Heiligenberg in the Lake Constance district
The Lake Constance district provides a broader geographical context: it stretches along almost the entire northern shore of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg and extends into the Upper Swabian hill country and, to the east, the West Allgäu hill country. The district has 57.7 kilometres of Lake Constance shoreline. Its landscape is shaped by the lake and the neighbouring hills, with orchards, vineyards, meadows and forests. This regional perspective complements Heiligenberg’s local hill trails and castle history.
