In Uhldingen-Mühlhofen, the Uhldingen Time Trail, the pile dwellings and the natural beach at Unteruhldingen give a stay different focal points. The routes lead to sights and monuments in the district; at the museum, a virtual dive and historical building techniques take centre stage. The natural beach also has a beach volleyball court and playground. This lets you balance culture and time at the beach according to your interests.
Uhldingen Time Trail: two routes to choose from
The long route on the Uhldingen Time Trail is 4.8 kilometres long and leads to Unteruhldingen’s main sights and monuments. The western route is shorter, at 2.5 kilometres, takes about 45 minutes and follows the Ehbach stream: it takes you back to the Stone Age and to the open-air pile-dwelling museum. The comparison makes it easy to choose between a longer loop and a shorter route; an approximate walking time is also given for the western route. Before setting out, check the current wayfinding signs on site.
Pile dwellings: a virtual underwater world and building history
The Unteruhldingen Pile Dwelling Museum is Germany’s oldest archaeological open-air museum. At the ARCHAEORAMA, visitors take a virtual dive to the pile dwellings in Lake Constance. The DISCOVERER TRAIL offers another perspective: in its pile-dwelling cinema, experimental archaeologists introduce visitors to building techniques of the time. Together, the two experiences bring the pile dwellings to life both underwater and through their construction methods. Before visiting, check directly with the museum to confirm that these experiences are currently operating.
Natural beach and other local highlights
The natural beach at Unteruhldingen has a beach volleyball court and a playground. This offers an alternative to the historical attractions: you can focus your time in Unteruhldingen more on the museum and Time Trail or on the beach, without limiting your travel companions to just one type of outing. At the Auto & Tractor Museum on Lake Constance, 350 vehicles on display illustrate 100 years of urban and rural life. This complements the history of the pile dwellings with a look at vehicles and everyday life.
Nearby, the Birnau pilgrimage church stands between Nußdorf, a district of Überlingen, and Uhldingen-Mühlhofen, amid vineyards high above the lake. This magnificent Baroque church is a monastery cared for by Cistercians and a well-known place of pilgrimage. Its architectural and religious character differs markedly from Unteruhldingen’s archaeological attractions.
The wider region: Bodenseekreis
In the broader Bodenseekreis travel region, the landscape stretches from Lake Constance and its northern shore to the Upper Swabian hills and, to the east, the West Allgäu hills. The district runs along nearly the entire northern shore of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg and has 57.7 kilometres of lakeshore. Alongside the lake, the landscape is shaped by adjoining hills, fruit-growing, vineyards, meadows and forests. This regional setting extends beyond Uhldingen-Mühlhofen and encompasses a variety of places and themes.
In Überlingen, the Bodensee-Therme combines thermal bathing, sauna infusions, its own bathing beach and panoramic views of Lake Constance and the Alps. Its thermal water is drawn from a depth of more than 1,006 metres and flows into all the warm-water pools. In Friedrichshafen, the Dornier Museum displays almost 400 exhibits across 6,000 square metres, including 14 original aircraft and a helicopter. The Eriskircher Ried, the largest and most valuable nature reserve on the German shore of the Upper Lake, offers opportunities to experience local nature. These examples show the variety of cultural, bathing and nature attractions in the Bodenseekreis.
