Historic Traces in Bodman
Bodman Castle and its castle park are located in the center of Bodman and are privately owned by the aristocratic von Bodman family. The historic Torkel stands nearby: this half-timbered building was once used for winemaking. The Torkel press beam, which is still visible, was formerly used to press grapes. The building and the press beam thus point to different aspects of winemaking in the past.
The history of the stilt houses is also part of the local story: in 2011, the Bodman-Schachen site was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps.” Archaeological connections thus complement the historic sites and buildings you can discover in Bodman.
Lakeshore, Nature and Hiking Trails
An extensive network of hiking trails leads along winding paths to natural attractions and historic sites. Options include a circular hike to the BodanrĂĽck heights and a walk along the lakeshore. In the lakeside gardens, walks on spring and autumn mornings invite you to enjoy the silence and watch waterbirds on the lake.
At the Aachried nature reserve, an information trail with ten stops provides insights into endangered animal and plant species. The lakeside gardens offer another way to experience nature: waterbirds can be watched on the lake there. In Bodman and Ludwigshafen, the lakeside gardens are home to World Heritage adventure playgrounds designed like stilt villages.
Water Activities and Lidos
At the natural lidos in Bodman-Ludwigshafen, you can swim, surf, wakeboard, sail, dive and go boating. Some facilities may operate seasonally. At Bodman lido, visitors can swim in the lake and play volleyball. Canoes, kayaks (La Canoa), water bikes, stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats and rowboats are available for hire there. Rental options may vary by season; check which services are currently available before your visit.
Stand-up paddleboards and canoes are available for hire at Ludwigshafen lido; this rental service is also seasonal. The lido also includes a listed wooden building with cabins facing the lake. As well as water activities, Ludwigshafen therefore offers a distinctive historic building on the lakeshore.
The Marienschlucht Gorge Nearby
The Marienschlucht Gorge is located near the destination. The lakeside path from Bodman to the gorge is open to walkers; it can also be reached via the hiking trail network from Bodman, Langenrain and Wallhausen, by boat, or by bus via Langenrain. Following its closure after a major landslide in 2015, the Marienschlucht Gorge reopened in March 2026. A new panoramic walkway leads through the rocky landscape. Along the paths to the walkway, an information trail covers wildlife, plants, geology, history and the importance of water.
The children’s trail follows hiking routes from Bodman, Wallhausen and Langenrain to the Marienschlucht Gorge; it is not a designated circular route. Sections of the path from Bodman to the gorge may be temporarily closed. So check current notices before setting out.
