Pfaffenhofen has two distinct highlights: architectural history in the town and the history of fossils in the surrounding area. The Protestant church and the rectory next to it are associated with the architect Heinrich Schickhardt; at the White Quarry, an educational trail illustrates the Keuper period. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Pfaffenhofen, architecture, geological history and outdoor routes provide specific ideas for planning your trip.

The White Quarry: Geological History and Fossils

At the White Quarry, an educational trail with illustrated information panels provides insights into the Keuper period, more than 200 million years ago. The panels cover prehistoric creatures, including capitosaur amphibians, crocodile-like reptiles, armadillo-like armored reptiles and dinosaurs. The visit thus takes you from individual animals to the distant geological period in which they lived.

The history of the discoveries is also specific: the first Pfaffenhofen fossil found at the White Quarry was a trunk fragment of an aetosaur in 1906. Albert Burrer (1866–1939), the quarry’s lessee, handed it over to Prof. Eberhard Fraas of the Royal Natural History Cabinet in Stuttgart. The quarry’s most spectacular fossils also include skeletal remains of Sellosaurus, described as the oldest dinosaur in Europe. Thus, alongside the broader geological history, individual finds and their record are also at the heart of the story.

Walking Routes on Different Scales

The White Quarry can only be reached on foot. From the White Quarry hiking car park, the Rennweg leads about 300 metres west to a narrow, signposted footpath that goes to the quarry and the viewing platform. Check the route conditions locally, as the route description may change.

A different kind of route is the 9 km circular trail that runs above Pfaffenhofen in the Stromberg area and links seven fountains. The approximately 300 metres refer to the section of the Rennweg leading to the footpath; the nine kilometres, by contrast, are the length of the entire circuit. The figures therefore refer to different stretches: one is the access route from the car park to the footpath, while the other is a circular walk linking seven fountains.

Church Architecture and Heinrich Schickhardt

The Protestant church in Pfaffenhofen and the rectory next to it are buildings by the architect Heinrich Schickhardt. At St. Lambert’s Church, the Gothic choir and the equally Gothic sacristy are the oldest parts. These details offer two different points of reference for understanding the architectural history: Schickhardt’s association concerns the church and the rectory, while the information about the choir and sacristy identifies the age of specific parts of the building. The European Heinrich Schickhardt Cultural Route also begins in Pfaffenhofen. The name thus connects the local architecture with the cultural route’s starting point, without requiring you to take a longer route.

Heilbronn as a Regional Context

Looking at the wider destination of Heilbronn broadens the perspective to include the district. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route is one of the cycling routes highlighted there. The Heilbronn district also has around 1,000 km of signposted day-long circular routes in Kraichgau, Zabergäu, Weinsberger Tal and Schozach-Bottwartal. The fountain circuit specifically located above Pfaffenhofen and the routes across the district therefore represent different planning scales: a named local circuit on the one hand, and a regional network of cycle routes and day-long circular routes on the other.
