In Jagsthausen, Roman history and memories of Götz von Berlichingen are closely intertwined: Götzenburg Castle is his birthplace, while the open-air museum and collections offer different insights into Roman times. There are also circular hiking trails on both sides of the Jagst and two cycle routes that cross in the town. You can tailor your stay to culture, outdoor activities or a mix of both.

Götzenburg Castle and its history

Götz von Berlichingen was born in 1480 at Götzenburg Castle in Jagsthausen. Jagsthausen Castle Museum displays items from the family’s collection, his iron hand, and Roman finds from the Limes fort and the Roman civilian settlement. The collection thus brings together personal mementos and evidence from different historical contexts.

Please note the access restriction when planning your museum visit: Jagsthausen Castle Museum is currently open to visitors only by prior appointment. Arrange your visit before travelling. Another historical landmark is the White Castle, built in 1792.

Roman Jagsthausen

The Roman Baths Open-Air Museum in the town centre displays the ground plan of a Roman military bath dating to around 200 AD. The museum “Constant Companions – Roman Everyday Ceramics from the Krapf Collection” showcases Roman everyday ceramics and offers insights into Roman life around the same period. The two sites have different focuses: one centres on the ground plan of a building, the other on objects from everyday life.

A trail with educational information boards passes a reconstructed Roman well on its way to the fort area and the museum in Götzenburg Castle. A Limes tour in Hohenlohe also begins in Jagsthausen, at the remains of the fort and the Roman Baths Open-Air Museum. Benches marked “World Heritage LIMES” stand along three routes in the municipal area. Their information boards explain conditions along the Roman imperial frontier between 160 and 260 AD. These stops offer different ways to explore Roman times, from the ground plan of a building and ceramics to the history of the frontier.

Hiking and cycling along the Jagst

Eight circular hiking trails explore the countryside on both sides of the Jagst within the municipality. They range from 3.5 to 19 kilometres in length and cover 85 kilometres in total. If you would like to choose a route based on its length, this range offers a clear point of comparison.

Two cycle routes are also highlighted: Jagsthausen lies on the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route, which has been awarded four stars by the ADFC. The German Limes Cycle Route and the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route cross in Jagsthausen. If the current ADFC rating is important to your plans, check it in advance.

Another guided option in Jagsthausen is a 120-minute nature walk featuring stories and legends from the past, as well as views over the Jagst Valley. Check the booking details before your trip. The guided tour has a set duration, while the circular hiking trails offer a choice of distances.

Choosing Jagsthausen as your overnight base

The local highlights offer clear pointers when deciding what to do: Götzenburg Castle and the Roman sites suit a focus on cultural history, while the hiking and cycling routes are ideal for days outdoors.
