Neuenstadt am Kocher combines a distinctive ducal past with a rich literary and architectural history. In the town centre, half-timbered houses stand alongside remnants of the town fortifications and historic buildings. Cleversulzbach, a district of Neuenstadt, is also one of the places where literary themes and the town’s history meet. This means you can tailor your stay to different interests: architecture, Mörike’s connection to the area, or guided explorations.

Ducal history in the townscape

From 1649 to 1781, Neuenstadt was the residence of a junior branch of the Württemberg ducal house. The castle and the magnificent coffins in the crypt of the town church are reminders of the Württemberg ducal family. The period as a residence provides the historical point of reference; the other features in the townscape reveal different facets of the town’s history.

These features include half-timbered houses, the neoclassical building of the Dr. Carl Möricke Foundation, old fountains and sections of the town wall. The medieval Franzosenbrückle bridge over the Brettach, the former Schöntal administrative estate and the Helmbundkirchle chapel also shape Neuenstadt’s historic townscape. The mix ranges from half-timbered houses and neoclassical architecture to a bridge, fortifications and religious buildings. Those interested in architectural history will find not just one historical focal point, but several distinct features throughout the town.

The Upper Gate Tower adds a clear timeline to this picture: it was built around 1300 as part of the town fortifications, while its present spire dates from 1831. The tower’s construction and the later change to its roof therefore represent two different building phases. Another historical landmark is the public court site, in use since 1448. The thousand-year-old linden tree that once stood there no longer exists.

Mörike, Cleversulzbach and the Museum in the Sheepfold

The town’s literary connection leads to Eduard Mörike, who immortalised Neuenstadt in his poem “I enter a friendly little town.” In Cleversulzbach, the Mörike Museum provides information about the mothers of the poets Mörike and Schiller. Their graves are in the cemetery in Cleversulzbach. The poem, museum and cemetery each have a different focus: Mörike’s literary remembrance of Neuenstadt and the mothers of the two poets in the town district.

Another LAUSCHTOUR is entitled “Mörike in Cleversulzbach.” It brings nature and literature together and follows in Eduard Mörike’s footsteps through the landscapes around Neuenstadt. The route is therefore not limited to the historic town centre; its theme connects the poet with the surrounding landscape.

The Museum in the Sheepfold also brings together different periods. It opened in 1991 in a former sheepfold dating from the mid-18th century, which was extensively restored for this purpose. The town presents exhibitions by renowned artists from Germany and abroad in the gallery and beneath the roof structure. If a particular exhibition is important to your visit, check the current programme in advance.

Guided tours and cycling route

The currently available LAUSCHTOUR, “Neuenstadt Town Walk,” leads visitors to stops throughout the historic old town. It tells the stories of significant buildings, influential figures and important events in the town’s history. A guided tour of Neuenstadt offers a different set of highlights: it includes the Lindenanlage, with around 100 stone columns, and numerous historic buildings in the town centre. Dates for guided tours may vary by season, so check the current schedule if you would like to plan your visit around one.

The LAUSCHTOUR town walk focuses on buildings, people and events, while the described guided tour also includes the Lindenanlage with its approximately 100 stone columns. Neuenstadt is also on the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route. When planning, you can therefore choose between focusing on the town’s history and planning a stay around the cycle route, without combining the two into a single tour.
