A stay in Gundelsheim can be shaped by different interests: the Historic Trail and its stops, Horneck Castle above the banks of the Neckar, or the wine trails leading to Michaelsberg. Other highlights include the pilgrimage church in Höchstberg and themes related to the history of the Neckar River.

Town History and Horneck Castle

The Historic Trail takes you through Gundelsheim via 17 stops. The walk begins at the information board on Schloßstraße. This gives you a specific starting point for your exploration; the stops provide a clear connection to the town’s history. If you prefer a series of stopping points to a single destination, this trail offers a distinct way to get to know Gundelsheim.

Horneck Castle is perched high above the banks of the Neckar and offers views of Gundelsheim’s old town. The Transylvanian Museum is also located at Horneck Castle. Here, views of the old town and the museum’s location offer two different points of interest for planning your cultural activities.

From Gundelsheim am Neckar train station or the Gundelsheim, Stadtmitte bus stop, you can reach the castle on foot in about nine minutes, walking through the old town. If you are travelling by train or bus, check the current connections.

Paths Through the Wine Country

The walk to Michaelsberg begins in Gundelsheim’s historic old town, passes through the “Himmelreich” vineyard area and climbs up to Michaelsberg. The hill is a prominent landmark of Gundelsheim, with a distinctive vineyard site. The difference from the Historic Trail is clear: there, 17 stops structure the walk; here, the route climbs from the old town through a named vineyard area to Michaelsberg.

The wine culture walk through Gundelsheim offers a different focus: it includes a tasting of selected wines and culinary specialities. This lets you choose between a walk that passes through a named vineyard area and a tour where the tasting is part of the programme.

Church and River History

The pilgrimage church “Our Lady of the Walnut Tree” is located in Höchstberg, a district of Gundelsheim. It adds another clearly identified place to the Historic Trail and the castle for planning a culture-focused visit.

A guided tour along the Gundelsheim towing path explores the history of the Neckar River and brings it to life with stories and poems. This offers a different perspective on the Neckar than the view of the old town from Horneck Castle: the tour focuses on river history and storytelling. If you would like to include this tour in your plans, check the date in advance.

The Wider Heilbronn Destination

The wider Heilbronn destination adds longer cycling and circular tours as a separate focus for planning. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route is one of the cycling routes highlighted in Heilbronn district. The district also has around 1,000 kilometres of signposted day trips on circular routes in the Kraichgau, Zabergäu, Weinsberger Tal and Schozach-Bottwartal regions. These routes operate on a different scale from the paths through Gundelsheim: when planning, you can decide whether to focus on local themes or include regional tours in the wider Heilbronn destination.
