Around 120 exposed half-timbered houses from different periods make Eppingen’s Old Town a distinctive destination for a cultural stay. There is also a town and half-timbered house museum, Mühlbach Lake and hikes with various points of interest. When planning your stay, you can therefore prioritize the Old Town, the water and longer routes instead of trying to fit everything into a single day.
Old Town: Half-timbered houses, church and museum
Eppingen’s Old Town is a tourist attraction with around 120 exposed half-timbered houses from different periods. A walking tour also takes in the late Gothic Catholic town church, with its valuable wall paintings. A stroll through the Old Town thus brings together different architectural periods and a close-up look at religious art.
The “Alte Universität” is the largest and tallest half-timbered house in Eppingen. This impressive building was constructed in 1494/95 in the style of a late medieval department store. Today, the “Alte Universität” Town and Half-Timbered House Museum offers over 800 square meters of exhibition space and permanent collections on the development of half-timbered construction and the history of the town. A guided tour lasts about 60 minutes. Check the tour options before your visit, as they may change.
Mühlbach Lake and the Sandstone Trail
Mühlbach Lake offers a different focus from the Old Town: its water surface covers 8,300 square meters, and its depth ranges from 1.10 to 2.80 meters. In addition to its excellent water quality, it has sunbathing areas, tiered seating and a shallow, sandy access to the shore. Nearby cycling and hiking trails add to the local recreational options. This makes a stay by the water a separate activity, distinct from the sights in the historic town center.
In Mühlbach, the Mühlbach Sandstone Trail runs through the green space in the town center. The second section was completed in November 2017; ten artworks line the approximately 500-meter stretch. This short, clearly defined section offers another way to explore the town on foot and enjoy its artworks.
Hiking: Steps, views and two railway stations
On the EP2 – Wander3Klang Eppingen hike, the Himmelsleiter is the first stop along the way. This impressive ascent through Eppingen Forest leads up 202 steps to the Baumannshütte. A detour takes you to the “Kraichgaublick” viewpoint: from there, the view stretches across Eppingen, deep into the Kraichgau and as far as the Odenwald. A small wooden platform with benches invites you to take a break or have a picnic.
The EP4 – Stadtbahnwandern Eppingen-Sulzfeld offers a different kind of route. It starts at Eppingen railway station, passes numerous viewpoints on the way to the stonemasons’ village of Mühlbach and continues to Ravensburg Castle, ending at Sulzfeld railway station. The hike also leads to Jägersee, a lake surrounded by woodland at the foot of Ottilienberg; the Forest Sensory Trail is also located there. The difference between the endpoints is important when planning your trip: the EP4 continues beyond Eppingen and ends in Sulzfeld.
Getting there and planning your stay
Eppingen railway station is an S-Bahn hub between Heilbronn, Karlsruhe and Heidelberg. Connections between Stadtbahn S4 and Elsenztalbahn S5 are coordinated. Check timetables and connections before your trip to make sure your arrival and onward travel work with the stops you plan to visit.
When looking for a hotel in Eppingen, your planned activities can be a useful first filter: will your stay focus mainly on the Old Town and local history, or would you also like to make time for Mühlbach Lake and the hiking trails? If you choose the EP4, take into account that it ends at Sulzfeld railway station. This lets you organize culture, time by the water and hiking according to your interests, without trying to fit every stop into the same day.
