Niederstotzingen brings together Ice Age history, pilgrimage traditions and a variety of walking routes. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between Vogelherd Cave and the Archaeopark visitor center: the cave is currently inaccessible, while an original artifact from the cave can be viewed at the visitor center. The routes also offer different options, from an approximate walking time to a route through every district.

Ice Age History Around Vogelherd

Vogelherd Cave near Niederstotzingen has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Caves and Ice Age Art in the Swabian Jura” since summer 2017. It is located in Stetten, a district of Niederstotzingen. As of September 25, 2026, the cave is currently inaccessible; this status may change. Check accessibility before your visit.

The original mammoth made from mammoth ivory, found in Vogelherd Cave, can be viewed at the Archaeopark Vogelherd visitor center. The Archaeopark brings the Ice Age to life in its open-air grounds with an adventurous trail of discovery and sensory experiences. Visitors can also learn about the dimensions of a mammoth, the vegetation of the time and basic survival skills from experts. This brings a tangible original artifact together with an introduction to life in the Ice Age: encounter the mammoth in the visitor center, and explore tracking, the environment and survival skills in the open-air grounds.

The Pilgrimage Church and Its History in Stetten

The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary in Niederstotzingen-Stetten houses a Black Madonna in its Chapel of Grace. The church’s construction was tied to the growing flow of pilgrims: after the castle chapel became too small, Baron M. A. von Riedheim decided to build a new pilgrimage church with a Chapel of Grace. Christian Wiedemann was commissioned to plan and carry out the project; the church was built between 1732 and 1735.

The Chapel of Grace can therefore be understood both as the home of the Black Madonna and as part of that building project. For a cultural-historical perspective on Stetten, the focus here is on the pilgrimage, the growing number of pilgrims and the construction period—a different way into the history of the area than the Ice Age art at Vogelherd.

Town Walk and Routes Through the Districts

The town walk in Niederstotzingen starts at the railway station, takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and can be shortened at any time. The approximate duration and option to shorten the walk give you a useful time estimate if you want to keep your stay flexible.

The 18-kilometer Nature and Culture Circular Trail passes through Niederstotzingen and all of the city’s districts. White ground markings and the black 650th anniversary logo indicate the route. If you want to include the districts in one route, this clearly defined circular trail is a good option; the markings guide you throughout the entire city area.

Another option is the Panorama Heights Trail. It starts at Niederstotzingen Town Hall and climbs briefly to Galgenberg, which stands 498 meters above sea level. The routes differ in the details that are useful for planning: the town walk offers an approximate duration and can be shortened; the Nature and Culture Circular Trail is 18 kilometers long and passes through all the districts; and the Panorama Heights Trail features a short climb to Galgenberg.
