Heidenheim an der Brenz offers a variety of highlights for a stay: the architecture of Schloss Hellenstein, traces of Roman settlement, Picasso posters and the landscape of the Schlossberg.

Schloss Hellenstein and seasonal music

The Schloss Hellenstein Museum offers insights into the architectural appearance of the late Renaissance castle. It extends across several rooms in the Lower Castle, built by Duke Frederick I of WĂĽrttemberg around 1600. This connects a look at the architecture with the construction history of this part of the building.

During the season, the castle church, with its excellent acoustics, provides the setting for the “Museum Music” concert series. The Heidenheim Opera Festival takes place from mid-June to the end of July. The Museum Music dates may vary; the exact dates and programme of the Opera Festival change each year.

Roman traces and Picasso posters

The Museum in the Roman Baths presents impressive remains of Heidenheim’s significant Roman settlement, ancient Aquileia. The Heidenheim Art Museum owns the world’s largest collection of posters by Pablo Picasso. The cultural highlights are therefore quite distinct: one focuses on archaeological evidence of an ancient settlement, the other on Picasso’s poster art.

Park and forest on the Schlossberg

A spacious, gently rolling park with broad lawns and mature trees surrounds Schloss Hellenstein. The wildlife park is situated on the Schlossberg in an attractive woodland setting. The landscape therefore varies between the open grounds around the castle and the forest at the wildlife park. Several paths lead uphill to Hellenstein from the old town.

The Congress Centrum Heidenheim on Heidenheim’s Schlossberg is a venue for congresses, conferences and cultural events. It lies between the Heidenheim Nature Theatre and Schloss Hellenstein, providing another clearly defined reason to visit the Schlossberg.

Getting there and the regional perspective

Heidenheim can be reached by regional trains on the Brenztalbahn railway line between Ulm and Aalen. Regular buses operated by the Heidenheimer Verkehrsgesellschaft run from the central bus station to Schloss Hellenstein on routes 6 and 7. For planning your journey, you can consider the regional train, the bus connection to the castle and the uphill paths from the old town as different options. Check connections and timetables before travelling.

In the wider travel destination of Heidenheim, karst formations, lively river courses, forests and heathland are part of the landscape of the Heidenheimer Brenz region. The certified long-distance hiking trail Albschäferweg runs for 158 km through this region, a cultural landscape of the Swabian Alb shaped by traditional migratory sheep farming. The trail is dedicated to the shepherds and their flocks. This regional perspective complements the town and Schlossberg themes with another landscape and hiking connection.
